I've had my slim PS3 for a few months now, and when I power it on and after I turn it off, it makes really loud popping sounds. It sounds like a knuckle popping, but 10X louder. I figure that it is the expansion of the plastic due to heat, but I've never heard any other product make these loud sounds. Everything on the system works, and I've never had a issue function-wise. But those pops..they are really loud and, to me, they're a cause for concern. Anyone else heard about this?

Mine has made noise since jump street, but not popping. It's more like as it's playing a really weird quick noise sometimes a few times in a row....but i've heard a lot of them have weird quirks that don't seem to mess up the actual playing

Mine does it all the time... from googling, it looks like the expansion of the plastic due to heat is the cause.

The heat/expansion thing is probably what it is. The strange thing is, a lot of the time it will start popping just a mere 5 seconds after I turn it on. I'm not an engineer or anything, but that doesn't seem like enough time for anything to significantly head up and expand. I could be completely wrong though. ha

Its nothing. Its just the sound of the plastic inside the system expanding and contracting.
