How are people tackling list making?

I went to the movie sites that I like to use and looked at the top rated movies for each year. Scanned my movie collection. And wrote down all the ones that came to mind, and made one giant list. Then I started narrowing it down.

What percentage of your list are you devoting to nostalgia and what percent to actually good film?

A dedicated a little bit of mine to nostalgia (Lion King, Sandlot, Tombstone and even Dumb and Dumber)and the rest to the quality films of the decade. The hard part is figuring out how the two compare to one another.

its a fricking cartoon.

That doesn't make it a bad film you dumbass. Would live action Lion King work AT ALL? I mean yeah there's broadway, but there's no way that story couldn't be animated. Animation is merely the medium that is most effective for conveying the imagination. Up until very recently, it was very, very difficult to make these worlds believable in live action form. And even if they can make some of these worlds believable, it is often preferable to convey it in the animated genre since they are able to manipulate the physics and humor far more in animation than Live Action.

At least when it comes to my list, the top 6 films all deal with incongruent reality, hmmmmmmm.

Also, Just realized Unbreakable was 2000, I thought it was in the 1999 crop. Bummer, that should totally be on the 2000's list.

I had to cut this for Dazed and Confused. I get why someone would pick this first, it was a really great movie, but Dazed was possibly the top comedy of the 90s, so I had to go with it.

Oh, and it is the director thing for those who don't know how I connected the two.

I never got the love for Dark City. Not bashing the movie, but this is a pretty big cult classic that I just wasn't all that in to. Someone explain why it is so awesome.

Why don't you throw in The Godfather Part III while you're at it, though I do secretly want to see some love given to Dick Tracy.

I am feel pretty smug about putting Billy Madison one step above Schindler's List. But I'm just following what my heart tells me, y'know.

I'll start:

Jackie Brown is superior to Pulp Fiction.

OK, if you guys want a smack down, I'll give it a try. I think the notion that Jackie Brown is better than Pulp Fiction is a classic case of backlash. Something, in this case Pulp Fiction, gets so much praise and hype from critics and fanboys a like, that it can not possibly live up to the expectations. Naturally people who see it after getting so much hype are somewhat skeptical and because they have been told its the greatest thing ever it has no where to go but down and they will never be able to judge the movie on the merits with being influenced by the hype. Note I realize that may not be the case for all on this board, but generally speaking, I think that is the case, not just about PF.

Now, I really like Jackie Brown, its great, like Pulp Fiction its has great characters and great dialogue and like Pulp Fiction, Jackie Brown resurrected a couple of careers. But its much more conventional than Pulp Fiction, especially for a QT movie. There is nothing innovative or different about Jackie Brown. Its a really good crime drama, just like the very comparable Out of Sight.

I know most of you would agree that Pulp Fiction is much more influential movie and has been probably the most imitated movie since it was released. Its hard now to appreciate how different Pulp Fiction was when it was released, but it was. Its completely character and dialogue driven and not in chronological order. Pulp Fiction was really not like anything we had seen before. I can see people that argue for Resivior Dogs over Pulp Fiction, though I disagree, but Jackie Brown

I thought you hated this movie and it was 2000's anyway?

I'd forgotten about this movie, but Deborah Kara Unger
