Brought on by comments in the Robin Hood trailer thread..Whats is wrong with like blockbuster fare ?

Why is going to a movie for just a fun and entertaining shoot em up/ blow em up thrill ride experience looked down on around here by some?

I mean, if you want all the character a plot development and none of the splosions and special effects, read a book..they are WAY better and telling a story and conveying emotions.

Because stupid writing, bad acting, and unlikeable characters are unforgivable for some.

It takes an engaging plot with engaging characters to get me to give a shite about anything that is happening on the screen.

Uh, I like plenty of Blockbusters...

Star Trek
Zombieland this year.

One guilty pleasure that I always say is Armageddon. Heck, I even watch Independence Day if it's on.

But Robin Hood likes like crap. Or I should say, it looks like Gladiator.

I don't consider myself a movie "snob," I like to think of myself as a movie "fan." The snobs go into a movie looking for reasons not to like it. I always try to like what I'm watching. There's nothing wrong with popcorn flicks in my mind, I like a lot of them, but I just don't like when a movie does nothing but pander to the lowest commom denominator...all FX, explosions, and no substance.

I enjoy both. Sometimes I just need to be entertained, and sometimes I'm looking for more.

Some of my favorite movies are popcorn flicks such as Tombstone, A Knight's Tale, and A few Good Men.

These are favorites, but I wouldn't put them on a top 20 list of best movies.

I didn't read the thread that caused your post, but I think some people have difficulties distinguishing the difference between a movie they like and what would be considered a "best movie". This distinction perhaps causes some of the perceived snobbery.

At least that movie was well constructed and entertaining. It's worth watching.

I some popcorn flicks. I hate some too.
Bad acting is normally the breaking point for me though. But that goes for any movie.
Transformers 2 is the best example of a popcorn flick gone wrong. They couldnt have cared less about story. Just thrown in as many new transformers as possible and let em fight for two hours.
Gladiator is a good popcorn flick IMO. Good acting all the way around. Good character development. A bad guy that made you hate him. And a nice story. Andthats part of the reason I'm not jumping on the Robin Hood hate bandwagon.

I will always disagree with that.

TF2 was made solely for the reasons you listed. They didn't care about facts or plots because they didn't have to. People weren't going to see TF2 for a deep plot and character development. They were going to see cool-looking transformers and watch all kinds of crap blow up.

TF2 is the definition of a popcorn flick period...not one "gone wrong".

Generally speaking, the more explosions a movie contains, the less I like the movie

I'll always give a movie credit if it does what it intends to.

But I thought even the dominant fighting robots element of Transformers 2 was completely inadequate. Every robot is gun metal gray, you can't tell who the frick is fighting who, the camera angles are consistently up close and confusing, and during the action sequences I thought I was watching a corrupted CGI file.

It's not what a movie is about, it's how it's about it. And since "blockbusters" tend to tread safely with all the money involved, they have a greater propensity for getting hated on. I have never seen anyone outright dismiss them though. There are many acclaimed action films.

In TF1, they were able to do this and provide a decent story. I expected the same from TF2.

I like explosions. I also like a plot. If you're going to spend $100 million on a movie, how hard is it to hire a screenwriter.

And I hated Transformers not because of evil killing robots, but because I couldn't follow the movie because there were just a punishing number of jump cuts. To give Cameron credit for Avatar, I like the sweeping camera a lot better. Really, you can blow shite up AND respect the audience. They aren't exclusive.

And I like a good gross out comedy or even a blockbuster action movie. Just this year I loved Zombieland, Taken, Star Trek, and Sherlock Holmes.

I agree with all of this.

I have no problem with popcorn flicks. I grew up in the 80s I was raised on action blockbusters. My beef is with people who watch nothing but popcorn flicks acting like those of use who like a little variety in their films are the ones who are snobs.
