If what happened was college coeds going spread eagle in an athletic competition, then that's what happened. He's not inventing reality here. He's reflecting it.

If you have a problem with it, contact the NCAA and outlaw the manuevers, or get them to cover up.

The photos may be prurient, but they're not obscene. So back off.

Lighten up, Francis. The issue was that he picked THAT venue. It's all in good fun.

I read you. Just supporting the OP. Some issues are going mean more to some people than others. Free speech issues affect my ability to earn a living, so of course I'm going to be loud about it.

BBA: I think he was responding to Freshly71...

quote:

1. Shoot RAW format if possible. It will be friendlier to fixing later with software on your computer.

I started with raw, then chickened out because the AF was so slow, dropping me down to about 2 fps. Thought RAW was slowing me down. I now know that RAW wasn't the issue.

quote:

2. Take noise and low-light over blur any day. Blur ruins a photo. Low light can be boosted with an ISO adjustment. Noise can be filtered somewhat with software.

Point well taken. Best software? Noise Ninja?

quote:

3. Sometimes you need a faster lens. Look for a 1.8 f stop or lower to deliver more light in tough spots.

I'd love a 150-300mm 1.8 What I really needed was a PRO camera (Nikon D3/700) and a Nikon (not Sigma) 70-200 2.8. A D90 and the Sigma are good, but not as good as the pro camera and OEM lens.

quote:

4. The darker it is, the harder it will be for you to shoot hand-held. Look into a monopod to help combat blur.

I have one, but didn't bring it.

quote:

5. Practice with manual focus. When it's dark, autofocus has trouble locating the focal points of a photograph. Your brain works better in low light.

I didn't even think about that. I should have locked focus on the end of the vault, then switched to manual focus, and it probably would have turned out better.

Thanks for the tips!!

That will work.

Adobe Lightroom can also cure A LOT of evil in photographs, from various sources of evilitry.

Sometimes you have to find the spot and let the action come to where you're set up. Kind of like how on NFL Films, you see those iconic shots where the frame is empty and then the receiver and the ball move into it? That sort of thing. If you know the sport well enough, you'll figure out where the shot is going to be. You can't be everywhere at once... so try being somewhere that you feel good about.

A side note. Women's gymnastics has been impacted by the childhood obesity problem in America over the last 30 years. I'm sure the girls at the collegiate level are all in good shape.

But I attended a HS meet two years ago and was shocked at how many girls were chubby.

... after 22 years, it has never been brought to your attention that posting crotch shots are universally frowned upon by all but the Rantards?

At some point all photographers accidentally display pics they don't realize are faux pas...but this is the first time I have seen someone claim 2+ decades of experience and proceed to offer sage advice supporting the continued use of angles that will only sabotage future professional development.

I decided to go check out some photos on lsusports.net to see if they adhere to your standard and it looks like they are pervs as well. Apparently the entire national media is too regarding gymnastics and the Olympics. You people need to get off your high holier-than-thou horse.

Nice pics. I took the basic B&W photography class when I was in school and one of the assignments was to capture motion blur, ISO and shutter control. Gymnastics was the perfect opportunity to experiment with different settings.

And I disagree that blur ruins a photo. Sometimes a perfect blur captures the moment better than a freeze frame. I had to shoot with a 50mm prime lens on a Pentax K1000 so you dont really need a pro 400mm f1.8 lens to learn.

Surprised at this response by you lsuconnman, as you are probably the best photographer on this site (of those whose work I have seen--not familiar with SPQR's).

The point of shooting a gymnastics meet is basically to capture the graceful lines of highly trained athletes flying through the air. Is it my fault that 50% of the time the girls go airborne they do the splits? Is it my fault they wear form fitting outfits rather than the pants that male gymnasts use? Is it my fault I'm trying to better my skills by shooting in challenging conditions? Those young ladies are judged on their grace, form, and acrobatic ability. And I am judged on how well I can capture these--and other--moments. I don't think I should be judged on the contents of the photographs--content over which I have no control. I'm sure had LSU still had a men's gymnastics team, I would have been labeled a homosexual for posting pictures of male gymnast on the pommel horse, or doing the Thomas Flare on the floor.

If I were to stage a photo shoot and control every aspect, then you can judge the contents.

None of the images on lsusports are near as bad as these. I was at that meet and from where u were sitting, a lot of gymnast on beam should have been facing you. yet your pictures only have them facing away. also the first crotch shot is extremely bad, that shoudn't even be shown.

re: LSU Gymnastics Pics

Actually, most of the leaps they performed were facing away from me. If you think about it, there would be much less visual distraction while facing toward the center of the arena.

None of my dismount shots came out very good.

Maybe she should not perform that maneuver???

It's nothing about a high horse, but whenever you photograph ladies there's an additional factor you have to be sensitive about. Last week I was asked at the bball game how my gymnastics pics came out the previous evening. My answer was "I think I did OK, the gymnasts were upside down, in focus, and there wasn't any crotch."

I regularly discuss trends in gymnastics and cheerleading with SI and other nationally recognized photographers because it's one of those areas where you don't want someone catching you off guard and calling you a pervert.

The only reason I even responded to this thread was because the OP is clearly trying to learn the sport, and following the advice that you can approach gymnastics like it's any other photo journalistic assignment will take the poor bastard out at the knees.

...as the O/T says...that is all...

I remember when Ashley Claire Kearney came to LSU she had a big ol' bubble butt and was chunky and I thought, "No way this girl can be a great gymnast!"
