I work about 5 miles from that exit. Now, "Bessemer" does conjure up less than glamourous thoughts but the establishments at the exit are new and its a huge source of income for Bessemer so its very, very safe. Now,forget 'nightlife' unless shopping at the Cracker Barrel there is your bag.

I would highly reccommend 'The Bright Star' for dinner Friday night.

Thank you very much I-59 Tiger. The thing about staying in Bessemer is you have to go to or through Tuscaloosa four times. :) Is that an easy drive. thanks in advance

You best wake up VERY early on Saturday to beat all the gameday traffic. When I say traffic its like something you've never seen before, it is just crazy from bessemer to tuscaloosa which is about a 35-45 minute drive is bumper to bumper the whole way.

from that aspect it couldn't be simpler. That exit in Bessemer is only 37 miles from I-359 in Tuscaloosa. Then you just have to factor in your own arrival, tailgating habits in terms of how much time you need because it can be hit or miss traffic wise.

Only "concern" you might have is 'nightlife' because it is virtually non-existent in Bessemer.

10-4 on the Ferriday aspect. However, every room in Tuscaloosa is gone now. I mean like the entire hotel is booked. So Bessama it is.

We stayed in Bessemer one year and took a charter bus from the hotel to the game. Nice way to travel although we couldn't bring the full compliment of tailgating accessories. And affirmitive on the lack of nightlife in Bessemer - non-existent.

Between Meridian and Tuscaloosa, unless you are travelling with some Buford Pusser types with your own firearms,I'd pass on those establishments.

I live in Helena (Exit 6 off 459) and the best way to get to t-town on game day from Bessemer is to take Hwy 13 to Hwy 12 to Hwy 11 which turns into University in Tuscaloosa. Not much traffic takes me all of 30 minutes from campus to my house.

There are better options, check McCalla, Hoover, or Pelham. You are a quick shot to 459..and only 45 from T-Town.

Another way to go is down 25 through montevallo, it spits you out on McFarland Ave south of Dreamland.

We stayed in Bessemer for a game back in 2001. Hotel was the Best Western. This place was a dump. Exterior corridors type of place. All we used it for was to sleep; we travelled to Tuscaloosa on Friday night and went to Dreamland and then partied at the bars just off campus. Its not that bad of a drive to go on just make sure someone who drives parties lightly. We did not have any traffic until we arrived in tuscaloosa, about 5 hours before the game.

When I booked the room, the BW agent told us that "Continental Breakfast" was included with our stay. The day we checked out we were seriously hungover, so we went to the front desk and asked for our continental breakfast. The desk lady laughed, pointed at a table while laughing, and there was 3 hour old coffee in one of those Denny's style coffeepots(see through glass) with sugar, creamer, AND THATS IT there was our "Continental Breakfast."

Another memorable moment of college.

The exit in Bessemer is Exit 108 Academy Drive. There are a couple of hotels there, several eating places and a Wal-Mart. It is a nice area near Alabama Adventure Park and there is a golf course nearby Frank House and Bentbrook GC is not far away either. Not a bad area to stay.

Advice from a local as far as getting to back to Tuscaloosa from Bessemer to the game: Take I 59 to exit 100 (Abernant Bucksville) which is actually Alabama Hwy 216. This is a 2 lane road (fairly curvy) that winds through Abernant and Brookwood. If you stay straight on this road it will take you all the way to campus. From the time you get off the interstate it is about 25 miles from the exit to BDS. Traffic will not be bad on this road. Avoid I 20 especially after the game is over.
