The Detroit Lions will retire the number 93 for the 2009 football season in memory of player Corey Smith, one of three men lost when their fishing boat capsized off the Florida Gulf Coast three weeks ago.

not to sound like a dick, but just because someone dies, does their jersey need to be retired? I mean he didn't die committing a heroic act and it's not like he was a focal point on the team anyway.
but I mean, it's not like Detroit will have any big time D-Ends that's gonna need that number anyway.

I thought about that, but it is only for a year.

+1
The question that begs to asked is, "What did Smith accomplish that would lead to his jersey being retired?" The Lions can retire whoever they want, but 99.9% of sports fans had never even heard of him before the boating accident.
It reminds me of the old Simpsons episode when Springfield thought a boy fell down a well.
Homer: "Lisa, the boy's a hero!"
Lisa: "What makes him a hero?"
Homer: "He fell down a well."
Lisa: "How does that make him a hero, Dad?"
Homer: "Well, it's more than you ever did!"

Again, its only for the 2009 season. So its not really retiring the number. Just kinda holding it for a year.

Ah, well I guess that's a nice thing to do for his family and and little more understandable.

Ah, that makes a little more sense.

They should announce his jersey is being "honored" for 2009 instead of "retired". It may help avoid the trashing of a dead man.

The lone survivor reported that one of the men thought he saw land and started swimming never to be seen again and the other took off his life jacket and went under and never came back up. It seems like they would have found the body of the guy that started swimming. Was Smith the guy that went under?
