when Mizzou to the SEC is discussed. The question is, does anyone in St. Louis or KC actually watch of care about Mizzou? Seems like they are pro sports towns and Mizzou plays third or fourth fiddle at best. Am I wrong?

third fiddle in 2 separate large media markets aint bad. besides, once baseball is over there is nothing to watch on saturdays but college football

I don't think TV markets were much of a consideration when the original SEC was formed

My wife is Missouri grad, she would not watch a mizzou game if it was on. They don't have passion we do.

Anecdotal, but my uncle lives in Missouri, originally from Texas, and he says Mizzou has a big following up there, being the only major university in the state.

KC is a pretty big college sports town, when the Chiefs and Royals aren't playing. Hosts the Big-12 hoops tourneys and KU and MU play football at Arrowhead and baseball at Kaufmann every year. Probably more KU than MU (most of the KC suburbs are on the Kansas side of the line) but almost an even split. Local sports anchors (Jack Harry among them) are big MU boosters.

Alabama Slim, that's a good question to ask. So many people forget that's it not just about TV markets, the overriding factor is market penetration. Sure, a school might happen to be located in New York City, but does that mean a lot of New Yorkers are going to be consistently watching and caring about their College Football team? Some conferences have had to learn this the hard way.

If Mizzou would get in the SEC, it could change dramatically over the next few years.

I myself lived in Missouri for a couple of years, and went to jr. high in Kirkwood, which is just outside St.Louis.
I saw the passion Missouri residents had when they would upset Oklahoma or Nebraska. The problem with Mizzou has always been fielding consistently good teams.
The SEC, or the Big Ten, for that matter, would bring in the extra money and exposure that just might be all that's needed to jump-start Mizzou football to the next level.
Their situation is very similar to LSU's, in that they are the only big-time Div 1 school in that state. A change of conference and additional revenue might just be the catalyst they need.

The TV networks think that Mizzou delivers those 2 TV markets and that is what matters. Adding Mizzou means a substantial jump to any conference's TV revenue.

I know STL have mostly a mixture of Mizzou and Illini fans, while KC have a little Mizzou fans but it's mostly a KU town considering Lawrence is right down the interstate. But I'm sure people would watch the SEC because it's GOOD football. And remember the KC and STL markets extend into a good portion of Kansas and Illinois counties. Basically the SEC would not only pick up Missouri but it'll pick up Eastern Kansas and middle/Southern Illinois.
Mizzou have a good football history, ESPN ranked them in the Top 35 programs of all time. They've also beat Ole Miss(2x) and Arkansas the last time they played them in the past couple of years. Mizzou will have a down year this year because of injuries and a sophomore QB starting for the first time.

Everybody already watches the SEC.
The benefit of adding Missouri or even Texas markets is being way overstated.
