Why is the LSU job's prestige so polarizing?

You've got people out there who think it's easily a top 5 job with no in-state competition and the top per capita NFL talent producing to recruit in.

Then you have those who say basically LSU is only good because of what Saban built and Miles quasi-maintained. Mixed in with it's a tough job since you have to play Bama every year.

Don't know that I've ever seen a job with opinions so far all over the place. Some saying right behind USC & Texas and then others throwing it out there with Va. Tech and Arizona State (albeit taken from SECr ).

What gives?

pretty sure you can't find one sane individual who doesn't think lsu is a top 5-10 job. It's really not debatable.

I've seen plenty of people debate it. OU fans I'm around think it's a step down from OU (wut). Go look at the thread over in the SECr (I know, I know). But still.

well Pollack, Galloway and Finebaum, all just said on CFB live that it's a top 5 job, and all said it's a better job than USC.

Are there 10 or more active head coaches in college FB that LSU could NOT go get if they wanted? I dont think so. There is your answer.

The main thing is LSU is a bit of a "new money" player -- sort of like Florida -- in the sense that it doesn't necessarily have the old blueblood history/prestige thing. That probably doesn't matter anymore, but older people think it does.

There is also a lot of bickering over LSU's recruiting advantages. I'm in the camp that being the sole power in one of the most talent-rich states after the top three is the number one draw for the school. But, others say there is a ton more available talent in other states, even if it is divided up over several schools. So, they believe that perceived advantage is overstated.

For many the late 80s and 90s are their earliest memories of college football. For every fan of opposing teams that ask LSU fans, "Did LSU football exist before 2000?" the same reply to them should be, "Do you know how many games LSU won from the 50s through the mid 70s?" Not to mention LSU won two SEC titles sandwiched between some really awful years in the 80s. As another poster pointed out, Louisiana politics got in the way in the 80s and 90s and prevented LSU from staying a top performing football team. When Mark Emmert entered as school chancellor and hired Nick Saban, it was shown to everyone around the country what could happen when LSU committed itself to excellence.

Honestly, does anyone really think that Les Miles would have won big at most other schools? No chance.

For a generation LSU struggled to even be above average and most sports writers are intellectually lazy and nostalgic (which is why they invariably wax poetic about Notre Dame).

The Florida comparison is apt

LSU pre Saban/Miles isn't a historically elite program but now they have the built in advantages + expectations of a top 5 program. LSU's Win% without Les + Saban wouldn't even crack the top 25

LSU just fired hte guy with 5 top 10 finishes in both AP/Coaches. Before Miles, LSU only had 6 top 10 finishes in both polls.

LSU is a top 10 job. Only a retard would argue. But it is not top 5, or clearly better than FSU, UTk, UGA, or AU. LSU has the worst AD in the SEC, and is at the bottom in terms of academics. But to say it is Top 20 is redic. I would come and coach LSU tomorrow if that dumbass AD of yours would hire me.

LSU is clearly better than UTk & AU due solely to recruiting advantages. Take out advantage of LA/TX recruiting pipelines though and LSU doesn't belong in that group

As an Auburn fan, I find it funny you say Alleva is worse than Jacobs.

GTFO with UTk or AU. You want to make a case that it is on par with FSU or UGA, fine. I disagree, but I can accept that. I think Texas is 1; LSU, USC, OSU, and Bama are about on the same plane of 2-5. Then, you get your Mich, FSU, UGA type schools to round out the top 10.

There are people voting for Hilary

And people voting for Trump.

There are people who know what's up and people who have their heads up their asses.

Saban was a coach with an NFL background but moderate success at MSU. He came to LSU and became the best coach in the country.

Les Miles, goofy as he is, won 112 games here.

There are more LSU players in the NFL than any other teams 3 years running. Let that sink in.

The burden of proof that Texas or USC is a better job than LSU is on you.

I'd say The Coliseum is a shitty place to watch a football game with no gameday atmosphere. Texas is not in the SEC--and if you want to be the best that's where you coach.

The only people who think either Tennessee or Auburn are better jobs are fans of those schools
