Why does everyone think South Carolina is a good job?

It's really not. Spurrier is the only one who has won there. South Carolina is basically Rutgers. Tennessee, Georgia, and Florida will always have the money and the prestige in the East.

I'm sorry, but I just don't see them pulling off a great hire and I certainly don't understand why everyone's ranking SCar over VaTech

If Clemson didn't exist it would be decent. There is talent in SC. They just have to share with a better program unfortunately. Plus Georgia is right there so the kids also have a better (SEC) program to choose from as well if they insist on playing in the SEC..

It's like a black hole when you start talking about championships.

My opinion at least.

Lots of SEC Network money with a willingness to spend it.

Money isn't really an issue anymore.

prestige in the East.

More of a problem.

THe SEC tie makes it a good job to begin with.
Biggest problem is their recruiting base and you also have a Clemson program to challenge you in your own state.

They have had a HOF coach the last 16 seasons and never sniffed an SEC championship.

Clemson and South Carolina don't go head to head for recruits as often as you may think.

USC lives and dies in Atlanta with recruiting.

Clemson seems to live in die in Florida with their recruiting.

Because of it's proximity to golf courses.

They're in the top conference and will probably pay in the $4,000,000 range. Are there better jobs? Yes, but there are many more worse ones.

Spurrier was a great hire for them at the time. They're capable of landing a big name.

Sure in a vacuum. But if Georgia, for whatever reason, let's richt go, they are probably third behind USC and Georgia which can make things difficult

So right now, they are second at worst. You could probably argue VT over them, I don't really know anything about VT's facilities or resources.

OP saying they are on Rutgers level is laughable.

So you're saying we're a bad job?

We have plenty of money to spend, brand new facilities, fertile recruiting location, and are in the division of the SEC where there is no clear-cut favorite year-in and year-out.

I'm not going to say we're a better job than Georgia, because we're not. But we do have many of the factors that make a job attractive to the kind of coaches we have our eye on, and will be able to sell a coach on the fact that they will have complete control in a very low-stress environment. The South Carolina fans and administration are very patient, and will not expect immediate success.

We lack the prestige and historical success of other schools, and no one is denying that. But I think that is exactly the kind of selling point we'll use to our advantage, all while having the kind of resources that other successful programs have.

So, you can say we're on par with Rutgers, but that really is far from the truth. People will say that Spurrier achieved nothing here, and they're only looking at W's and L's. He turned us into a contender.

South Carolina is a good job because of the money, facilities upgrades, fan support and its reasonable expectations and because we are in the SEC. Our AD being a former coach adds more interest for some coaches.

We are certainly in the same tier as VT and only below Southern Cal at this point. Some coaches will prefer VT and other will prefer South Carolina depending on what they are looking for.

Saying we are Rutgers is just a pathetic troll attempt.

It really is. You don't know what you're talking about or you are making an ill informed opinion.

SC has more $ and exposure:
- A lot of $ and even more coming in with the SECN and media contracts.
SC is valued at the #14 team in the country by the Wall Street Journals's most recent estimates. Miami and va tech aren't even in the Top20.
https://www.wsj.com/articles/whats-your-college-team-worth-1421081367
- SC is ranked the #17 most valuable program according to Forbes, and again ahead of miami and va tech.
https://www.forbes.com/pictures/emdm45el/university-of-south-carolina-gamecocks/
- The SECN, ESPN and CBS deals have us on tv more often and in a larger capacity than va tech's or miami's acc deals.

Elite academic support and solid academics.
- We have the 3 year old Dodie Academic Enrichment center, which offers free state of the art free tutoring and academic support services to our student athletes.
- SC leads the SEC in APR.
https://espn.go.com/blog/sec/post/_/id/83148/mizzou-south-carolina-lead-apr-rankings
- SC has a variety of great degree programs, but our academic criteria for admittance isn't as stringent as a place like Wisconsin.
- Although we also have some elite programs like the #1 International Business School in the world and the #1 Honors College

New Facilities:
- We just built a new Indoor Practice Facility this summer.
- The weight room was just renovated 2 years ago.
- The Locker Room was renovated in the past 3 years.
- We have approval and have budgeted for the new coaching offices/suites.
- We renovated the stadium, had a jumbo board (Beast Board) before most other SEC programs.
- We renovated the area around the stadium the past 2 years, new parking areas, facilities, Garnet Way, landscaping, etc...
https://www.watsontatesavory.com/discover/wp-content/uploads/2012/10/FarmersMarket-09-08-2012-032.jpg
https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=6&v=HeemqHglngE
- We just built new Student Athlete Suites/Dorms for the players with Top Tier amenities. https://www.650lincoln.com/
- Also our fan support and gameday atmosphere could even be compared to the weakness that is miami. Va Tech has good fan support and gameday atmosphere...but our stadium is bigger and as we all know, size matters.

Recent Success:
- We won the East the past 5 years and were competing for it another 3 of those years.
quote:

Tennessee, Georgia, and Florida will always have the money and the prestige in the East.

We are 4-6 against those teams the past 6 years.
- We've beaten the #1 team, we beat ranked teams on the road, up until last year we had the nation's longest home winning streak of 18 games.
- We didn't win the SEC, we didn't win a BCS game, but we beat the teams that did. We beat clemson, Wisc, Michicgan, Nebraska, UCF( when they won their BCS)

Putting players in the NFL
- We put our share in the NFL.
- We had the #1 Overall Pick in the NFL Draft 2 years ago.
- We put a lot of DL in the NFL
- We have 2 QB's in the NFL right now.
- We have several TE's in the NFL.
- Our current WR Coach has had more All SEC and All American WR's than georgia, tennesse and auburn WR Coaches Combined, and we're even going to fire him in a month.

Recruiting:
- Even with sharing the state with clemson, we consistently had Top 25 recruiting classes.
- We've dominated in state recruiting over the past 8 years. (Lattimore, Clowney, Gilmore, Holloman, Roland, Bailey, Stanley Blackshear,etc...)
- We are the closest SEC school to recruiting grounds in NC, VA, the mid atlantic states and northeastern FL.
- We have an AD who is a recruiting junkie and a BOT that recently said their primary focus on the next HC will be ability to recruit players and staff. We are going to put our $ where our mouth is on that and open the coffers for recruiting.
We would have had them opened already, but we had an awful Recruiting Coordinator and an HC who hasn't put much effort in recruiting the past 3 years.

Leadership:
- Our AD, Ray Tanner, is a former National Championship HC. He understands the importance of recruiting, facilities, etc....
- Lots of Coaches want to have a former HC as their boss, b/c they know what it's like (have walked in their shoes.)
- Our President, Harris Pastides, is the newly elected Chair of the Board of Directors for the NCAA.
- Our past 2 HC's were HOF HC's. (Spurrier and Holtz)

So now you know.

that's the only thing to take away from the OP. there will no doubt be many more attempts by even more ignorant minds. laugh and enjoy the shite show.

meanwhile, one of the most respected men in college sports is in charge of running the search to fill the Gamecock opening and any coach who's worth their salt will understand the advantages of having Tanner as a "boss" in the South Carolina AD. Dawn Staley will be the first person to tell anyone that.

Well said. The East is a mess, everyone has a fat checkbook in the conference, and there's a lot less pressure at USC. Someone up and coming will take a stab at it for if anything a nice paycheck
