Will they hire from within given all the competition for coaches this year?

I don't see a national search happening.

That is what I am thinking. It is different than the other jobs out there in that I bet they want to lean on that era for as long as possible.

I'd be shocked if it isn't Bud Foster

If it was 4 years ago, I'd say Bud Foster but now I feel like Foster has missed his moment to become a HC.

I don't think they go Kirby Smart because of his lack of HC experience and the questions of whether the defense is more him or Saban.

I think they go for someone like Pelini.

Pelini seems like a legit possibility as well

There are way too many open HC jobs for them to get somebody better than Foster IMO.

I think VT wants to bring back that "defensive attitude" people associated them with when they had their most successful seasons. They could look at a guy like Venables if they don't require HC experience but I'm not sure about his recruiting in the VA area.

I just read Foster is not a candidate.

Larry Fedora and the guy from Memphis are up there. Rich Rod and others

I think the plan was for Bud Foster to be the HCIW until Va. Tech fell apart the last few years. No insight, just my guess, since Foster was supposedly in the running for head coaching jobs but started to slide off of radars the last few years.

If they don't promote Foster, I'd be surprised if they went the coordinator route seeing as how they have a top notch, proven coordinator currently on staff who knows the program. I think they're good enough to get an up and coming head coach, someone like a Doc Holliday or Matt Campbell from Toledo.

Him or the Vest would be a homerun for them.

It could easily be Rich Rod (if he's willing to leave Arizona while his daughter is cheering there, weather is much nicer, etc.) due to his ties to the region and success he's had.

Doc Holliday as Marhsall would be another offensive-mind that has ties to the region and could likely be successful.

Or, VT could be Fuente's (Memphis) opportunity to jump to a P5 school.

Saw where Kirby Smart may be interested.

Does Bud Foster want to be a head coach? I've always seen him as one of those guys that is perfect as a coordinator but probably wouldn't be as successful as a head coach a la Muschamp.

This thought comes to mind as well, much like Chavis. I really think Foster has missed his window to move up.
