Another NFL name being mentioned...

Randy Melvin... He was Grantham's DL coach all three years he was defensive coordinator for the Browns...

Melvin is currently the DL coach for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He has turned Tampa's D-Line from dead last in rushing D to the best Rush Defense in the NFL despite several important D-Linemen being injured...

Won a Super Bowl coaching with the Patriots. Kids are grown, so nothing holding him down in Tampa. Melvin also coached with UGA DB Coach Lakatos at Rutgers.

Has worked under...

Bill Belichick - Patriots
Romeo Crennel - Browns
Al Golden - Temple
Greg Schiano (twice) - Rutgers and Tampa Bay Bucs
Joe Tiller (twice) - Wyoming & Purdue

To revive this topic somewhat, Marc Weiszer has posted a story after talking to Grantham about his candidates for the DL coaching vacancy. Nothing earth shattering, but he does say that he has some "quality candidates" and he will be working quickly after the bowl game to get the coach in place before signing day.

Chan Gailey was just fired in Buffalo. We need to target Giff Smith now; he has recruiting connections in Georgia and he has NFL experience...DO IT.

In all seriousness, I think Grantham already has his guy and is just waiting until after the bowl to name him. Whether or not that is Giff Smith or someone else in the NFL or NCAA remains to be seen. I personally think he is targeting someone currently coaching in the NFL.

Another name has been added to the fray. Seth Emerson is saying that Joker Phillips has called Todd Grantham on behalf of David Turner who was the assistant head coach and DL coach for UK. The name may not be sexy, but he always had good DL's at UK and has great relationships with High Schools in the state of Georgia. Turner also coached at Mississippi St. before UK where he helped recruit and groom Fletcher Cox.

joker philips works for florida, there is no way he would recommend a good d-line coach to grantham.

But Turner is known as a good recruiter, and word is Phillips - now the recruiting coordinator at Florida - has put in a good word with Georgia head coach Mark Richt about Turner.

It is not as cut throat in the coaching fraternity as you want to make it out to be.

So what you're saying is that if a good friend of yours is out of work and looking for a job; you work for Coke and Pepsi is hiring, your overriding hate for Pepsi takes precedent. Even though you have connections with Pepsi, you are going to make sure and not place a call. It doesn't happen that way. But maybe you are just more cold hearted than most people. (definitely more so than Joker, who I think is a great man)

Why would he not want his friend to get hired, even if it is a rival.

Happens to the best of us

Seems like a solid hire. MSU normally has a strong line, and he's a good recruiter from what I hear.
