Tom Herman and Houston's Rush Defense

Team Defense Rushing Stats
I'm very surprised "offensive guru" coach Herman, has such a good rushing defense. #1 this year, and #8 in 2015.
Most of the time having a top 10 rushing defense will get you pretty far. I looked up the last 7 years of National Championship games with their def rushing ranking.
2009 - Bama(2nd rush def) vs Texas (1st rush def)
2010 - Auburn (9th) vs Oregon (26th)
2011 - Bama (1st) vs LSU (5th)
2012 - Bama (1st) vs Notre Dame (11th)
2013 - FSU (18th) vs Auburn (63rd)
2014 - Ohio State (34th) vs Oregon (62nd)
2015 - Bama (1st) vs Clemson (18th)

Bottom line is Herman has in a short time defeated teams like FSU and Oklahoma, who should be more talented and deep than the Cougars.
