Have you actually watched any of his games? I spent way too much time than I care to admit watching plays from Texas, Pitt, and Oregon.
I prefer Pitt over Oregon but both are good; field is spread out, use multiple formations, misdirection, and use the entire field.

That Texas offense shouldn't even be in the discussion. I'd take Ensminger over that crap. If you like Gilbert what in the world do you like about that offense?

why don't you tell us what you didn't like about it first?

Never use the middle of the field, was told that is the spread but Pitt and Oregon use it. Passes were either 1 yard swings or a bomb; sound familiar? 90% of runs were reads up the middle. Seems to be much more delay in the handoff than the others; if an OL gets beat the DL is gonna be in the backfield making the tackle.
Much more misdirection, motion etc with the other two.

I don't think they ever threw over the middle. Les should be trying to woo him for his next stop.

Oh I'm far from an expert but it is what it is. There may be good QB development and I'm sure many nuances I don't see. When majority of plays are either a run up the middle or a swing pass it doesn't take a genius to see it.

Now it was impressive how quickly he installed his scheme with a frosh qb and many young players. Granted their best games came against shitbox defenses (notre dame, tech, iowa st) I just didn't see too much creativity or ingenuity in the passing concepts that would lead me to believe it could work here. Bubble screens and shots down the sideline, the odd 7 route. That seemed like it.

I will also say that I did notice they seemed allergic to throwing over the middle

I thought their qb regressed tremendously in the games I saw

Against easier competition too

Agreed. Maybe that was just him trying to limit mistakes from his freshman QB, but I was not impressed with the play calling in the few Texas games I watched this year.

What about looking at his playcalling when he was at Tulsa in 2015? Here is a link to the Tulsa/OU game in early 2015...also includes plays from other games that season.

LINK

My guess is that he had to tailor the offense to account for a true freshman QB...this Tulsa footage looks very different...a lot more slants and medium routes.

Gilbert and Briles like to play the numbers game. Spread you out wide and count the players in box. If you put 2 dbs on the 3 receiver side they throw the bubble screen, if your db plays more than 5 yards off throw the bubble screen. If you play tight man they throw the deep ball on the sideline. They also like to play fast 17 - 20 sec a play to confuse the defense. It's a simple concept and it works on average secret defenses. Not much creativity in the run game compared to Helfrich's spread.

I agree, I don't understand people who want Gilbert over Helfrich

I'm almost positive Gilbert did not call plays at Tulsa. I believe it was Philip Montgomery (OC under Briles who then went to Tulsa as HC). In fact, I believe this was the first year Gilbert called plays.

But you're right on the freshmen QB part - a FR QB who was injured the last half of the year and couldn't threaten deep. That hurt the offense more than anything else, since it's predicated on making the D at least account for the deep pass on every play.

Are you still basing this entirely off the UTEP clip that was posted here yesterday?

Well, the game against Kansas this year should raise a red flag as well

I completely agree. I was NOT impressed with his work at Texas, and feel that Helfrich 1 and Canada 2 are better options for us. Also, I don't want a 1 and done Kiffin to come in who would be constantly looking for a HC job, and Sark is AA risk.

No, I watched 3 games of each team; the UTEP clip is what got me curious about it.
