The Les Miles flirtation was nothing more than a negotiating tactic to attract attention once Auburn came into play. Long basically said we can pay this 5 mil per year, but your resume must look like this: 2 SEC championships, 1 BCS title, multiple BCS bowls. I wouldn't be surprised if the 5 years $27 mil was what Bass was requesting for Patterson & Long said we won't pay that for him but for someone with a Les Miles resume.
I also suspect Les went along with it to help. out an old buddy. The raise he got was going to happen regardless. Hell, it's only a 13% bump. It could have been deferred COLA increases packaged into a raise. Les hadn't had a raise in 4 years and that works out neatly to 3% per year.
The trouble that Long is in - this is a buyers market. If Auburn & Tennessee move first he loses any leverage on salary & may be behind a serious 8 ball. He almost has to have a home-run announced on Sunday. If not, recruiting will take a big, big hit.
I wish Arkansas fans luck. This isn't nearly in the ball park as the Joe Dean shite show's LSU fans suffered through when he hired "Don't Look Back" Curley Hallman & "He Watches Game Film in His Dreams" Gerry Dinardo.

Pretty good PR move by Long letting all coaches and schools know "this is what Arkansas will pay."

Coaches who are interviewing at Arkansas, AU as well as Tenn will be thinking about the Arkansas money if AU & Tenn do not offer enough.

I also suspect

since this whole thread is nothing more than your pondering of our coaching situation :hogsession: this little disclaimer should have came before the entire post. Also we never offered Les anything, he said so himself.

It was a tactic by Long and Miles, it may or may not work but yeah I think Bass was wanting some ridiculous money for GP that Long did not want to pay. May have too anyway but I just hope Long does not screw this up.

I believe an "offer" was made. I also believe that the "offer" was just a number that was thrown out to consider what would you need to think of leaving. Now said "offer" wasn't official and did not include or deduct from camps, cars, housing etc.

I believe Jeff Long contacted Les Miles in order to ask about Mike Gundy.

I'm not positive, but to have an official offer from Arkansas HR, Office of President, Vice President of University, Athletics and Bassett Law Firm must have documents filed and approved by each dept 24 hours before submitting the offer.

So Les is involved in a conspiracy with Arky to help ensure they get the best coach at the lowest price. Forest, trees, etc.

how could we get rejected by Gruden when we never offered him anything anyway. The only confirmed offer came from Tennessee and he did say no but pretty sure we never offered him. As far as Petersen and Patterson surely one of them will be our next head coach but if Monday comes and goes and we still have no coach then we are in for a real screw job.

I remember when LSU fans said the same thing and then we landed BP and they all chit themselves at once. A good coach can make all the difference and I have a feeling we have someone sowed up. As far as TAMU you guys need to recognize that 3-1 record over the past few years.

Of course not. Like I said, this was a negotiating tactic. It was important for Long to get that 5years/$27million out in the public space attached to a certain resume profile: conference championships, national titles. In a matter of weeks Arkansas went from being the only opening in the SEC to having to compete with UT & AU. He had to get that number out there. Sorry Kentucky, this is a big boy coaching search.
The "offer" was nothing more than bouncing a number off of Les to set the bar for what candidates could expect based on their resume profile.
Basically,Long: "Hey Les, if I offered you $27 million for 5 years would you be interested?"
Les: "You bet. But i'm not interested."
