Success of Coaches With a Second Chance After Being Fired at a Previous Spot

Comparing the NFL to college just ain't the same, it takes a completely different skill set for coaching at that level, and not all NFL organizations are run the same. So just looking at college only, has a college head coach ever been fired from one major college job and then succeeded when hired as head coach at another major college program?

They also mention Pete Carroll and Bill Belichick who are not object failures in their first stints and had really good years.
Belichick brought the Browns 11 wins and the postseason. The Browns. He was better than his predecessor and successor. Both were elite coordinators as well.
People are just really, really stupid.

Compare that with someone who went 3-21 in conference, regressed every year, went 0-8 in his third year with "his players and coaches", and was worse than both his predecessor and successor.

Gene Stallings might be the only example, but he had much more experience and had one winning season at A&M and had two nearly .500 records with the Cardinals in the pros.
Alabama also hired a DL coach to replace him and suffered for a decade for it.

Gene Stallings. 27-45-1 at Texas A&M from 1965 to 1971. The Aggies did win the SWC and the Cotton Bowl in the 1967 season. Every other season was a losing record.
19 years later, took over at Alabama in 1990. We know the rest.

He won a NC, and then retired so Alabama hired a DL coach who destroyed their program.

Good find. Of course, Alabama didn't pull him out of the trash bin. He was a head coach in the NFL in his previous gig before Alabama hired him.
So I guess Coach O should get a head gig in the NFL before a big time college gives him another shot at running the program, right?

Or a head gig somewhere else, for the love of all that is holy.

This is a stretch, but Ron Zook got Illinois to a Rose Bowl after being fired from Florida. Other than a couple other lame bowls, that was it though.

been waiting for weeks for O supporters to pull out this example.
It is the 1 and only example of this happening, so sure I guess it's possible. You're talking about hitting the lotto though.

But he's learned from his mistakes!
Which is a weird thing to say, because he made a shite ton of mistakes at Ole Miss. I mean, what mistakes has he learned from? That he now lets his coordinators coordinate? That was his mistake at Ole Miss?

Outside of Urban, Saban, & Petrino, pretty sure the 2nd job for most top coaches is worse off than the first regardless of if they left on their own or were fired.

even though he got that NC i think Chiz is viewed by most as an ultimately poor hire.

He was wildly considered to be a shite hire at the time. He got lucky, or paid a lot of money, and got a once in a generation player to come to Auburn for 1 season. Outside of that, he failed miserably.

I agree wholeheartedly...but it's not impossible. I don't think O has was it takes personally....but if we hire him I will support him and hope he can be the exception and not the rule
