Somebody explain how a coaching change contractually works?

Seems crazy that Lsu would put themselves in position to rely enough on a verbal agreement with sexton to let Miles go, and then leave themselves hanging in the breeze while sexton shops fsu or other schools for a counter offer. But possibly that's what's happened here.
My question is can they sign the new coach to a contract that spells out pending the release of current coach? (Before releasing the current coach) . Then it becomes official once the current coach is let go? (Kind of like buying a new house, pending the sale of your current house, so you don't get screwed into owning 2 houses when your sale falls through).

Bobby was on a plane to Auburn one time while Tuberville was coach!
LSU just fell into that trap.

This won't be on that level of fallout... but it's clear miles is a lame duck.
Tuberville won 55 games in five years after the plane ride to Louisville... but he and the AD could never shake the bad blood... that's gonna happen in Baton Rouge, but it won't drag out five years like it did for tuberville/ auburn.

I don't see how everyone has already given up on the deal. Miles isn't fired yet. Sexton is playing leverage games for $$ right now. If Jimbo wants to come to LSU, then he will.

Agreed, but im just curious. Are we allowed to sign the new guy before releasing the old guy? Or is there some legal reason that wouldn't work? Surely they knew fsu would make a play to keep him.
