BATON ROUGE, La. – LSU athletic director Joe Alleva, livid that Tom Herman backtracked on an oral agreement to be the next LSU coach, pulled his offer to the Houston coach late Friday night, a high-ranking source close to the search confirmed.

The source said a perturbed Alleva told Herman’s agent, Trace Armstrong, via phone Friday night, “Don’t worry. I have a guy who wants the job.” Ed Orgeron will be introduced as LSU’s new coach at a news conference Saturday.

As first reported by HornsDigest.com, Herman and LSU had an agreement in place for him to become LSU’s coach. The source would not divulge exact terms but did concede the annual compensation was “north of five (million per year).” Papers were to be signed Saturday morning in Houston.

That changed when Armstrong called Alleva on Friday night to inform him that Herman wanted to hear out Texas; the Longhorns fell 31-9 to TCU on Friday afternoon to finish 5-7. It was then that Alleva, angered that Herman and Armstrong had reneged, pulled the offer and decided to hire Orgeron, the source said.

I don't have any sources, but I've heard from others that do that this is correct.

Herman and LSU had a verbal agreement, and when it came time to put pen to paper, Herman backtracked. It's pretty obvious he was never really wanting to come here....agents leaked agreement to force UTs hand, fire Strong, and come after him. Pretty poor showing by UT and Herman's agent, and shows the power struggle between decision makers and boosters. Good luck with that dumpster Fire in Austin. And good luck to Strong....deserved better.

I honestly don't quite buy it...if there was truly an agreement in place, you go ahead and announce it that night, with a presser the following day.

That supposed line from Joe is more bullshite put out there for the "he wants to be here crowd!"

I had this really uneasy feeling from seeing the O celebration saturday night, like they knew this was all that needed to be done for alleva to shove this down our throats.

Orgeron has Alleva in his pocket from day 1. After The Florida game, Joe had to look like he was trying to hire someone else and then gave up first chance he got to go back the coach O

No you don't, Houston still had a game to play. The presser was going to be Saturday.

I agree. I was telling someone at work Friday the same. He'll be a good coach somewhere he doesn't have to fight that shitshow in Austin every step of the way.

The shite show in Austin is nothing compared to the dumpster fire in Baton Rouge. In 3 years, Herman will be going strong at Texas, and our new AD (hopefully this hire costs Alleva his job) will be getting ready to fire Orgeron.

I detest J.A. but this sounds legit as it is coming from a variety of sources. If it is, where J.A. is constantly ripped for not having any balls, I actually congratulate him for taking this stance. Herman's agent is the "bad guy" here even as he was only doing his job.

It's scary that irrational and emotional decision making like that can be allowed to take place in an organization that generates hundreds of millions of dollars.

its a bullshite story, sorry you don't tell the guy you identified as your top target to frick off because he may want to hear all of his options out, agreement or not.

We lost to UT and this is the LSU spin.

Hell I think I would rather deal with the reality of losing to Texas than our AD being that fricking stupid and childish.

Didn't Alleva hire the Alabama softball coach who after the press conference change his mind, I'd say Joe has a reputation for being a bitch that can be played by coaches, agents, players and the media a jellyfish has more spine than Joe.

It's obvuous to me that we were Herman's fallback. He wanted a big job. That job was Texas. He DID NOT want to come here unless it was his only choice. He got what he wanted. He went back on his word. F him ! I wish him Mackovic success in Austin.
Good on Alleva. We shouldn't be a fallback plan. What happens when 2-3 yrs when Texas comes calling to Herman in BR?

If that's true, why don't you just wait till Saturday evening and see what they counter offer?

It's not like we had a timetable with Orgeron. You lose nothing.

Ego is why. Alleva didn't want to feel bullied so he pulled the offer.

That's shitty negotiating IMO. Put your pride away, you do what's best for the University.
