Should head coaches have been coordinators first?

Is it just me or shouldn't the head coach of a program have an identity? Everyone knows Saban was a defensive guru, Meyer was an offensive mind. O has never been a coordinator, so he will always be reliant on coordinators to establish his identity.

No. Harbaugh, Meyer, Dabo weren't coordinators. Neither was Andy Reid.
