Not exactly seismic cfb news, but noteworthy. Outside of a few dismal years in Ann Arbor (where he begged Jeff to go along) Rich, Casteel and his 3-3-5 have been joined at the hip since nearly last century.

There's only a handful of guys that could swoop in and coach the scheme, and the best one just signed a new deal at WV that ensures him the DC position whether or not Dana Holgorsen is retained (and could be a head coach candidate if things go south in '16).

I'm guessing folks out there weren't happy and demanded a change in the whole defensive scheme. It'll be interesting to see which way Rod goes.

Yeah, the 3-3-5 can look great when it clicks like once or twice every four years, and can make havoc without top-100's on the DL.

But mostly it's watching your team's new uniforms get marched up & down the field by unimpressed, larger schools.

It's interesting because when Rich Rod was first succeeding at Arizona, there was an idea that he washed out at Michigan because he didn't bring over Casteel. Now, it's that the system is fricked. Why does Rich Rod persist with it? As mgoblog said when Michigan went to it against OSU this year:
quote:

I'm sure someone has run this at some point in the history of football and had it work, but I'm still at a loss to explain how that might happen. Whenever it's raised its head at Michigan it's been a debacle.

I remember a couple Gerg threads

Casteel always seemed to have good years on the right years - but without Wright, this was the wrong year.

I bet his agent told him he is not marketable with that shite defense. He wanted a few jobs that he didn't get this year.

Yep, the 3-3-5 just isn't a legitimate base defense
