Top of the list:
Gregg Marshall
Billy Donovan (if he's tired of the NBA)
Archie Millier
Brad Stevens
More likely candidates:
Johnny Dawkins (Duke ties)
Chris Collins (Duke ties)
Steve Wojciechowski (Duke ties)
Jeff Capel (Duke ties)
Kermit Davis
Anthony Grant
Rick Stansbury
Buzz Williams
Mike Davis
Travis Ford (if he brings Butch Pierre)
I think my top of the list would be awesome, but doubtful we would get any of those. Miller or Stevens would be most likely of those, however. I think Anthony Grant would be a good hire, we would definitely play good defense. I'm good with Kermit Davis or Stansbury, but would like to see an up and coming younger coach or somebody with good X's & O's. A coach I was really impressed with as far as scheme and effort by his players was the coach of North Carolina Central, LeVelle Moton. He's done well there, they played tough defense, and had open looks the majority of the night. Of course they were playing against JJ's defense ......
I just feel like Aleva is going to go with an older, more experienced coach or one of his Duke buddies so he doesn't have to hire a search firm, which is probably not a good idea.

You at least have to make the call, but there is probably a less than 1% chance any of those guys would even consider the LSU job. Marshall has been courted by everyone. He clearly likes WSU and is paid extremely well. Miller watched his brother parlay the Xavier job into a bigger gig with a basketball powerhouse (Arizona). I don't think the LSU job is as bad as many here believe it to be, but LSU isn't on the same playing field as Arizona at this point. Stevens is doing very well rebuilding the Celtics. Forget him coming back to college right now, let alone LSU. Donovan would be the Saban to Bama hire. However, he's only in year two with OKC. It would be really unlikely that he could be looking to come back to the college game.

I'd be very leery of the Duke guys. That coaching tree hasn't bore much fruit. Dawkins flamed out at Stanford. Capel, in addition to the scandal at OU, is back on the Duke bench for a reason. Wojo is improving MU and Collins is improving NU, but are they the next Tommy Amaker or Dawkins? Guys who initially have decent success at big jobs, but flame out quickly? Collins would probably be the only one I'd consider.

You could argue Jones has been better in his time at LSU than Grant was in his time at Bama. No thanks. If he couldn't win at one SEC program, what makes you think he can do it another?

His career has been in a downward trajectory since he took IU to the Final Four. IU --> UAB --> Texas Southern. The SWAC and MEAC or the worst conferences in college basketball. If LSU has to get their next coach from there, then God help us.

Alleva went with an experienced guy in Johnson. It didn't work. He went with the hometown guy in Jones. It didn't work. He didn't exactly leave Duke a hero, so I don't know how willing a Duke guy would be to work for an AD who unnecessarily and improperly fired a successful coach based upon a completely fabricated story.

I'm not saying Grant is the best hire, but probably needs to be on the interview list for a second chance. He recruits pretty well. I really wish we could sway Avery Johnson home, but he's not leaving this early in his tenure, while his son is on the team.

Is there a Cajun basketball coach around? He would be "one of us".
Keith Richard has done amazing things at ULM.

Randy Bennett, St Mary’s 54 / 328-148
OP Woodman: what makes you suggest this is even remotely possible?
---------------------------------------------------------
Bruised Ego: St Mary's is always going to play second fiddle to Gonzaga in the conference and by name recognition alone even to Santa Clara. Throw in Stanford and Cal and its always going to be an uphill battle. All the same time, Mark Few at Gonzaga likely makes nearly three times what Bennett makes.
Family Timing: Bennet's two boys are 13 and 14. If he's going to make a move, doing so before high school starts would be well advised. It seems Les Miles' kids had a good experience going to school in Baton Rouge.
Chance to Ring the Bell on having a bigger notoriety Success Legacy: Turning LSU into a perennial winner at or even perhaps the Dale Brown days would be telling. That's going to be a lot easier to accomplish in Baton Rouge than it would be taking on such a task at another Major Conference Basement Dweller [examples being: ACC = Boston College, Pitt, Clemson; Georgia Tech; Big10 = Rutgers; Big12 = OK State; BigEast = DePaul, St Johns, Providence; Pac12 = Oregon State, Arizona State, Washington, WAZU]? Filling an updated PMAC due to your success vs filling a 3,500 arena due to the school not affording to ever expand it. Having the ability to be in the discussion for every top player in your state vs getting the crumbs after Stanford, Cal, UCLA, USC and San Diego State traditionally pick up the best of the bunch.
Money: While the present amount is not easily found via internet search, the starting point of his 10-year contract in 2011 suggests he's making around $500,000, despite living in a community where the average price home is $1.25 million. Compare and contrast these equivalent priced real estate options:

Difference in Taxes in California vs Louisiana are substantial as well. State income and disability taxes in CA eat up another 15% or so of gross pay.

I would go with Kazaam. He is an alumis so he checks that box. He can grant Alleva 3 wishes. No way he can mess that up. Also, what kid wouldn't want to play under Kazaam?
As ridiculous as this sounds, I actually agree with it. Shaq paying in-house visits.. staring into the eyes of high school kids.. who's going to tell Shaq no?

Not to sound like an a-hole, but those guys wouldn't even take the time to return LSU's call. I'm typically the type that says you should shake the tree and make high profile guys tell you no, but in this case we shouldn't even waste our time reaching out to these 4.

No on the first 6 and the last 2. Davis is struggling to stay .500 at TX Southern. Butch Pierre is in a better situation at NC State with Gottfried than he would be at LSU with Ford.
I'd definitely call Williams, but in doing so we would have to magically become serious about our basketball program all of a sudden. A guy like Williams will come with demands (ops budget, facility improvements, etc.). Stansbury is probably a more realistic candidate.

Him leaving Marquette was completely baffling. It wasn't like he left for another "decent" program (ala Brett Belima leaving Wisc. for Ark) or to coach is alma mater (ala Jamie Dixon leaving Pitt for TCU). He left a winning program with good tradition to take a pay cut to coach an awful basketball program. In year 3 he has taken a bottom-feeder and turned them into a tournament contender, the the toughest conference in CBB.
If LSU is serious about basketball you throw good money at him and convince him he'll never be able to reach the top of the mountain in the ACC with Va. Tech. The climb to the top of the SEC is MUCH easier and he doesn't have to fight with UVA, Duke, UNC, NC State, Maryland, etc.
He's one of those guys you kind of hate when he coaches your opponent, but you love when he's your guy. He would immediately bring back excitement just with his personality alone. The only difference is he's also won everywhere he's been. Hell, he made UNO competitive the one season he was there!

Melvin Watkins is the only one who can put LSU in their rightful place in the conference and the college basketball hierarchy.

Id take a gamble on Donny Tyndall. Anybody know his current status on whether he can or cannot coach college bball?
He would be a hell of a hire you could get on the cheap, again if he isnt currently sanctioned from coaching in college.

He is going to get his shot soon at a bigger job someday soon. I'm guessing he'd probably prefer to not coach in the same conference as UF, but if its the best offer may be hard to pass up.
