Is Miles Age Working Against Him?

Serious question - Even though he wore out his welcome at LSU his resume, recruiting prowess and reputation for high character should normally qualify him for a head coaching spot on at least a team outside the Top 25,yet we've seen him passed over by Houston, Purdue, Cal and apparently Western Michigan. That's got to be tough for a coach who was once one of the highest paid in the country. Is there an age discrimination attached to Les Miles that will prevent him from coaching again at the collegiate level? While in his early 60's he certainly appears young enough to take on another program and build that foundation.

1) Doesn't need the job. He is being paid by LSU and can spend time with his kids.
2) Not that good a coach in most people's views. Out of date offense, inability to develop a QB and most schools like that don't have the money to hire the assistants he wants.

That's what's working against him.

No.

His offensive reputation and failure to properly utilize his talent is working against him.

His track record of poor offensive performances is the problem. Les trying to make people believe that he will change also falls on deaf ears. After he said it would at lsu he did absolutely no changes. That's the nail.

Would Miles deliberately tank an interview, since the terms of his buyout require him to seek reemployment? Seems far-fetched but the money NOT to work seems too good.
If he really wanted to resume coaching I would think he could convince some AD that he'll promise not to meddle with the offense and just play the GM role, as well as suck up to the boosters and high school coaches.

That's just an excuse the Sunshine Pumpers make for their boy since they can't admit that he isn't good enough of a coach to land a decent head coaching job. He was truly lucky to end up at LSU, it made his name.

If Saban was available he would be getting offers.

No. He just isn't very good. And without a budget to pay coordinators he is a below average coach.

Im not a Miles guy at all. But those that hate him refuse to acknowledge that maybe the dude doesnt want to coach anymore or right now. Hes got what, 3 kids in college playing sports right now? Why is it hard to believe he would fulfill his part of the contract, appear to seek employment, but really just want to watch his kids and make millions in the process?

The nature of his buyout is such that he must "appear to be attempting to obtain work."

He's tap dancing and cashing checks. Wouldn't you?

He has said in multiple interviews that he absolutely wants to coach again. Hell he even put a staff together on paper. The fact is nobody wants to hire him and that's all it is. He's not tanking interviews on purpose and lying to the public about wanting to coach again.

as a person that retired and then decided later to go back to work I can say that yes, some people practice age discrimination (and some don't). but there are many other factors in play. les miles was a top coach in the best division in the best conference in the country. the jobs he's interviewed for have to really pale compared to coaching LSU. the facilities, the pay, the programs' finances, the fan support, etc, etc. it is difficult to get "psyched up" for that step down. not to mention that ego's do indeed get in the way. I didn't want the stress of running a large division of a large company so I attempted to step down. that's where age discrimination can come in as even the job offers I got were largely from younger people that simply didn't garner much respect from me.

I think, if les miles really wants to work again, he will have to discover a reason to do so. like a new field maybe (tv, etc). maybe a small school that still offers amateur sports and not the semi-pro sports of the big boys. if miles truly loves influencing young mens' lives and doesn't worry about the money he could find a school that would hire him.

He had the LSU name on his shirt. I don't recall anyone calling Miles a great recruiter while at Oklahoma State.

The better question is, if he doesnt get hired in this cycle of coaching changes, is he done?

I do think he's done if he doesn't land a job this cycle, and I do blame his age for that. There are simply too many younger, high energy candidates eager for an opportunity.
