If Lloyd Carr is so powerful, how was he fired?

Wouldn't he have aligned his constituents and halted his own firing?

I am not sure if you're being sarcastic, because he wasn't fired. He retired after they beat Florida in the Capital One Bowl. Or some would say he conveniently retired after Chad Henne, Mike Hart, Jake Long, Mario Manningham and Adrian Arrington were gone.

No I'm actually serious. Was it not a "forced retirement"?

lol. he wasn't fired, or pushed out like some believe. He actually wanted to retire after the 06 season but Bill Martin convinced him to stay. Add to that his senior class in 07 was Henne, Hart, Long, Manningham, Arrington.
Thats why people were so angry with Bill Martin. He essentially had a year to lock a new coach up and still managed to scramble.

I'm almost certain that wasn't the case. They were coming off a 11-2 season the year before and he's already won a NC. He could have stayed as long as he liked.

I actually didn't realize that. I thought it was a "heavily requested" retirement, ala Bobby Bowden.

Ok makes sense then that he is still involved, my ignorance.

So are you saying that the pummeling you guys took by USC in those Rose Bowls, the loss to Texas in the Rose Bowl, and most importantly the Appalachian State loss didn't "force" the retirement?

just keeping the peace with the Wolverines here.

eh. while I respect what he did as a coach, he shouldn't be able to be this influential in the search. He had a great tenure here, but if he is truly meddling i.e creating factions and keeping out coaches that have amazing resumes to get in his own guys that aren't proven then I, and a lot of other UofM fans can do without his involvement.

Yea man that's like a president emeritus on a board of directors (insert any industry or organization). There comes a point the old dude needs to hit the fricking pasture and leave it alone.

I'm sure if Lloyd had known Appy State was going to turn out the way it did, he would have retired at the end of 06. In some ways I believe the team knew 07 was going to be his last year and thats why the first two games were so awful. He ended the 07 season in a great way though by beating Florida coming off an NC. I can assure you though, he was not forced out.

Similar to Floridas 2010 team, they must have known .... and/or the coach wasn't quite focused 100%

I dont know where yall were, but Lloyd Carr was forced out after the loss to App State. This was an embarassement to the program and the media wanted his head all year.
