Tom Herman by a lot, but I would love Kelly too.

Oregon's WRs under Kelly were absolutely elite blockers just like Florida in the Tebow era

This is a terrible assessment. Oregon offered the blue chip OL on the West Coast that went to Stanford. Then we had to choose from the left overs. Make no mistake - Oregon would have Murphy, Garnett, Banner, etc. on their oline if they wanted to be at Oregon.

Also, the one play between the tackles could be the furthest from the truth. He countered, wham blocked, used a ton of double tight end formations, etc.

Lastly, we probably had a top 5 blocking unit at WR during his tenure.

A diverse playbook in college is overrated. The kids don't have enough time to be consistently good at it. Learning 4 basic concepts and running wrinkles off that is probably the best way to go in college. I know the NFL hates it but these kids get like 20 hours of practice and have to balance school.

Obviously you are a big Oregon fan, can you tell us what are the downsides with Kelly?

Here are the notable problems:

1) He is a bit stubborn in playcalling with the run - it's a strength and weakness. For example, he should've thrown more early against Auburn.

2) Drama seems to find him. Blount incident, Cooper issue, etc. At some point, you have to attach him somehow to the drama. If he were to go to LSU, just come to expect and remember he will weather the storm. However, it still sucks as a fan.

3) He will play less talented players because they work harder. However, he will spend a lot of time with a talented kid that's troubled to get buy in.

Well we had that for the last 11years, that is not a trait I want in our new HC. If the past 10years in college football have shown us anything it has shown us you can't be stubborn and you have to adapt. Saban is a perfect example of someone who was stubborn as a mule but finally figured out if he truly wants to win year in year out he has to be able to adapt to the times which is when he hired Kiffin and we all know how that is turning out.

I don't mind that so much as long as he is using that as a motivational tool. Problem with Miles is he did that and would never change the player i.e. DJ Welter for example a very good middle linebacker for a d2 school but not in the SEC and we see what his backup "Beckwith" is doing

Thanks for the insight.

What you guys did would not be characterized as stubborn. It was insane. Chip will change it up and at times in hindsight he could've done it earlier. However, he's a steady guy that doesn't flail with the wind either.

We could've abandoned the run earlier against Auburn. However, the fact remains that we were getting whipped up front. You have to call a nearly flawless game to win when you're getting whipped up front.

Herman with absolutely no hesitation. That's not even a question.

Wait, I thought you were one of those people suggesting Brian Kelly.

It's tough to point to negative traits with a coach that was so successful. It's was always going to be knit-picky.

100% Herman.

The stars are aligned for LSU to get him.
He is going to be a major player in college football coaching...possibly the next Nick Saban IMO.

He will put some hardware in our trophy case.

Herman.

He's had success everywhere he's been. He's a great offensive mind and QB coach without needing everyone to fit a system.

Heard him say in an interview that you need to be physical in everything you do on offense. He's never heard a coach holding up a national championship trophy say "we out finessed them". He gets it and he is tailor made to do great things at a school like LSU.

What makes Kelly's offense a finesse offense?

No kidding, his motto is to get big people to beat up on little people. Just because his offense is efficient doesn't make it finesse.

Jesus...now I know you don't know shite. His WR's were bad arse blockers. His mentality is if you can't block you don't deserve to be on the field, no matter how good you can catch or run a route.

If LSU ended up with Herman, Fisher, or Chip I would be ecstatic. Those are elite coaches and you can't ask for anything more than that when you make a change.

FWIW, I thought the comments about Chip not being likely to produce in the SEC (when he's already had good success in the NFL) were strange but I understand people who don't like him because he has the physical appearance of a blob fish. I don't share those opinions because I don't give a damn if our coach looks like a deep sea creature so long as he produces at an elite level.

Agree with you. I'd prefer Chip over any of them. After his stint in the NFL I get the feeling if he comes back to College he'd stay put and at a place like LSU he'd have his pick of recruits.

Part of the reason he wasn't a big fan of recruiting was Oregon coaches put a lot more miles in the air because Oregon has little top recruits to choose from and many flee the state.

He wouldn't have to spend as much time because his recruiting grounds would be from FL to TX and he'd lock down the borders of LA.

He isn't stupid, and knows that. He knows the type of athletes that are in the south.

Fans may not like him and his NE witty attitude but he'd win and that in itself will win them over.
