For the "If it's not Jimbo or Herman fire everybody!" crowd. Coaches who were not "Top tier" when hired:

Arnsparger
Archer
Hallman
Dinardo
Saban
Miles

One of those is the greatest. One was close to top tier for only a while. The others......not so much. Hell, one was the worst in probably NCAA history.

Marry this with Alleva record of bungling high profile matters and we are doomed.

At the time of all of those hires, LSU was not a top tier program. They were close when they hired Miles, but back then Oklahoma, Texas, Ohio State, USC, and Miami were the big dogs. LSU wasn't nearly as attractive of a job as it is today.

The HC hire would not be the only reason Alleva would need to go. Have you been paying attention to our PR this year? Not being able to pull a big name for the HC hire would just be the straw that broke the camel's back.

Smart people know this is one of the best jobs in the nation (see in state recruiting )

I realize lsu fans like to short change themselves and that's probably why they've settled

Lol. Arnsparger and Saban were very well regarded at the time LSU hired them.

Have we ever offered 6+ million to go after an elite coach? maybe its time to try something different. Since the only one on that list we'd like to hire is making that.

So what your saying is Miles made LSU a top tier program??

And before anyone starts about upgrades in the facilities, LSU and Saban had done some damn fine upgrading....

Every year since the beginning of LSU football. That's more than 100 years. I hope you don't think losing McKnight or Collins = sucking at in state recruiting.

Uses the word "retard"... as a noun.

Sadly, only one of us is being intentionally simple for effect.

You missed the point. LSU has always had In-stare recruiting. I watched it win championships for other schools in the 90s. Also always had a passionate fan base, always (usually) had competitive facilities, always SAID the money was there, always had the potential to win championships every year.

Arnsparger - actually a pretty decent hire. Brought us back from Stovall (who was a good ol boy hire)

Archer - thought was an ok hire at the time, but was an up and comer who fizzled. More like Fedora but not really. Won wit Bill's talent but shite the bed with his own recruits.

Hallman - was the up and comer of his day similar to Fleck? But more like Skip Holtzesque to me. One trick pony at USM and that was Favre. He took LSU to depths we cannot and will not imagine today.

Dinardo - he was a "who the hell is that? Oh the dude that played for Colorado that time" hire. Brought the magic back, then took it away along with my affinity for Ford trucks.

Saban - a "didn't Dinardo beat him at Michigan State" hire. He literally put us on the map. Everyone knew and agreed that he was a good hire. We payed dearly for him and got what we paid for.

Miles - Stupid hire in '05 and remained so throughout his tenure. The ONLY saving grace was that he had the recruits fooled into liking him, and did manage a championship with Saban's players in spite of his ineptitude. Dumb hire and dumb coach.

So I think it's a mixed bag with whoever you get. Warmed over crab legs will resemble Arnsparger. Fedora or Fleck likely similar to Dinardo. Herman could be Saban or could be Hallman. I'm thinking he's more like Saban and would take the bet.

The reality is this though. Don't expect LSU to hire a homerun hire, and be pleased if they do.
