He did a helluva job at FSU. The argument can be made he was the first program in Florida that was able to use its huge talent base to its advantage over the other schools. Two years ago the Wall Street Journal made a pretty good case that if you wanted to play in the NFL, the school to go to was Florida State. Not bad for a school that was a joke when Bowden came there.

It was a nothing job when he took it over, but FSU played everyone, anywhere. You can thank him and Miami for ending the ridiculous tie in system we had with bowls that saw undefeated teams playing two loss also rans that had no business being on the same field with them as FSU was an independent and could play the top teams in their bowls almost at will. It meant the Oklahomas and Nebraskas could no longer hide in the bowl games because Bama or USC was tied in to their bowl games.

He helped make college football what it is today over the last 30 years and was fun to watch at times and lets be honest, who didn't enjoy seeing Florida State stick it to the schools like OU and Nebraska that were loved by the talking heads.

Enjoy retirement Bobby.

I think there is some story of him at FSU in the late 70s saying he would come coach at LSU when Cholly Mac retired if FSU didn't beat but us...well FSU won in 79 or 80 and the rest is history. Just think Jimbo Fisher could be our next head coach.

frick Bobby- Yea, I will admit he was a good coach, but he went to the ACC- a basketball conference, that he knew he could dominate, which he did for years, not the SEC. He also learned how to use thugs, Hargrave pipeline, etc. It was also Bobby who spread the "LSU is racist" bullshite in recruiting, so that he could pull a certain running back out of Baton Rouge. He kept coaching (or at least standing on the sidelines) to get more 'wins' so that he could try to be the alltime leader, but Joe P's health was a lot better. I was beginning to believe they would reel Bobby out with an oxygen tank & hospital bed, just so they could get him the 'win'.... And for the record, I always hated Fl St.

They went into the ACC for more than just Football. They were trying to place their Basketball and Track teams on the map. Which they did for both at one time.

They were in the Metro for Basketball at one time, so dont blame Bobby for the ACC.

Bobby Bowden may have done the greatest job in football history. May never be topped. I forget how many years they finished in the top 5, unbelievable number. FSU wasn't crap when Bowden arrived, he made that school a football school.

Dude, frick you. You sound like a little bitch. He built that program from the ground up, and if anyone is in bad health its fricking joe pa, WHO ISNT EVEN STANDING ON THE SIDELINES, so if anyone is just getting wins, its joe pa's arse. He looks like he might die tomorrow. Look past your hate for a school and realize he is one of the greatest coaches ever in CFB.

It was a privelage to watch Bobby Bowden coach in FSU's heyday. As much as I hated FSU, i couldnt deny what a hell of a job he did. By far one of the best coaches that I have seen and will ever see. He had a hell of a run.

No, frick YOU a-hole!! So I am suppose to kiss Bobby's arse because you do?? It's called an opinion, & I feel differently about the situation than you do. I am going to stop there, not worth being banned for your little whinny arse....

I began to dislike Coach Bowden when he started using these negative recruiting tactics. If I remember correctly, he started around the time Coach Archer began losing grips on the program. He even used one of Coach Archer's pregame talks against him, making fun of the way Coach Archer used index cards to remind himself of items he wanted to cover in the pregame talks to the team.

I hope his retirement follows the same pattern as Coach Bryant's.

That is true. We could've grabbed him.

My favorite play was that one against Clemson, the fake punt from their own end of the field at the end of the game. He had a 15 or so year run that except for Miami, no one could beat.

14 straight years with a top ten finish and and ten or more years would be dam hard for any coach to duplicate these days. Especially with the limitations on each school on scholarships etc. But hats off to him, still a very good accomplishment by Coach Bowden.

haha - we couldnt tell --

but I agree that Bobby stayed in charge WELL past his due date....a sucessful coach who could of chose to go out better, instead of after he was well past his prime.

very classy.

Like I said, you can thank him and Miami for breaking up the logjam that was college football. Their role as independent powerhouses was always underrated in that respect.

I have heard Tommy Bowden talk about what his father accopomplished. He said that Bama was Bama before The Bear and Penn State was Penn State before Joe Pa - both schoold had won NCs before - but Florida State was a damn all girls school until 1960

Our top choice was Pat Sullivan.
