Not one person on here would have hired Dabo Swinney at the time Clemson promoted him from interim head coach.

My point, whomever the next coach may be, the one quality you look for is recruiting. It's the only quality that will keep the program in good standing.

I've read on here Jerry Stovall was a bad hire. NO, my friend, Archer was. Stovall recruited lights out. When Arnsparger came in, he won immediately because of Stovall's efforts.

I've read that Les Miles was a Larry Coker. No, my friend, Miami is still paying for Cokers lack of recruiting. The next coach at lsu will have talent to win with.

The two things Dabo had for him, when he was hired, was passion and recruiting. It's what bread his success. Not the resume.

So, everyone will come on here tell us why another's guy isn't going to be the guy based on resume. To me, you better make Recruiter the #1 attribute. Regardless if the next guy succeeds or fails, if he can recruit, lsu will be ok.

Sorry, I initially took this as a Coach O thread, but now see it's not exactly that. If so, Dabo is the interim that worked. You also have John L, Bobby Williams, Bill Stewart, and now Clay Helton on the other side of things. You'll probably respond that those guys weren't super recruiters, and that's fair.

Dude. I'm still pinching myself each AM to make sure it's real that Les is gone because it was SO past time to make the move.

But you can't be serious. Decade long career, multi-millionaire, SEC ships, national title and another title appearance.

So it turned out better for Miles than it will turn out for 90%+ of college coaches over the lengths of their careers.

Well you might not want to tell the boosters and admin at Ole Piss that because they are going to shove a well known cajun back in your face. BeBe recruited the hell out of Ole Piss when he was there and went 10-25, and look what happened after he left Nutt did what BeBe couldn't do with BeBe's recruits, he won. Now funny literally the year after all of BeBe's recruits were gone Nutt was fired for shitty performance. My point being you have to coach also. Recruiting is the life's blood of the program but you have to coach them up to win championships. A perfect example is Saban/Miles both can recruit with the best of them but one is watching college football from the sidelines and one from his TV in his living room on Saturday's now. That is the difference you have to recruit and coach now if you want to win championships!!!

And he got fricking fired.

He never stopped recruiting well.

But he got fricking fired.

So it eventually wasn't enough.

A head coach does not need to coach. Needs to recruit. Recruit players and coaches. Then that head coach has to be willing to let both do their job.

THAT IS THE ENTIRE POINT OF THE THREAD. The next coach may or may not succeed. If he is a great recruiter, The program will be ok. Another coach can come in and WIN. Why, he will have talent.

Nutt, Coker, Archer, etc. could coach. They won while they had the players recruited by another. You don't want a coach that is a technical coach but can't recruit. HE WILL DESTROY THE PROGRAM.

Interesting thought. Look at Ron Zook at Florida. He was an average coach but fantastic recruiter. The cupboard was not bare when Urban showed up. He clearly didn't win like Spurrier but also didn't set the program back a decade.

yes eventually ... after TWELVE years it caught up to him. Everyone that hated the Miles hire on day one were eventually proven to be almost prophet like in their prediction of Miles' demise. It only took more than a decade and the most successful run of any coach in the history of the school - but yes ultimately you were right. he sucks.

if you could guarantee me that any coach would duplicate Miles' success (winning percentage, national title win/appearance, SECC wins/appearances, number of wins) i would hire him right this second no questions asked. You'd be a fool if you wouldn't too.

and the talent is here for the next guy. Picking the right coach to have success is not a guaranteed thing but picking a great recruiter...... that is easier.

Brady Hoke is another example, he couldn't get it done for Michigan but he left Harbaugh with enough talent to come in and have immediate success.

Not a bad thought, make sure whoever we hire is a known excellent recruiter not just X's and O's.

I don't give a shite how many games Jim Grobe wins at Baylor, they'd be stupid to hire him full time.

The thing about Miles is he recruited well, but didn't fill needs well. Too many times LSU had a lack of lineman, LBs and capable QBs.
