To me, LSU can't afford to wait that long. They either need to find a coach who will leave before his team's bowl game or right after. Waiting until a short time before national signing day seems like it would put the new coach with an impossible task.

I know UGA did it, but (1) he was a coordinator and it was done with Saban's blessing, (2) Kirby was named HC not long after Richt was fired, and (3) Kirby served in dual roles.

Unless you're going after a coordinator, I have a hard time seeing something like that work out and I'm not even sure Saban would allow Kiffin to do what he let Kirby do.

That's why I'll be cheering for Louisville when they play Houston.

Exactly. A one loss Herman will be looking to gtfo before a bowl game. And then have plenty of time to clean up recruiting

What about the Louisville coach?

People disagree on whether he would leave. I have no clue.

The things to consider are: his family loves it there, his job is forever safe, and he has a huge buyout because of the risks associated with hiring him

The nice thing about Herman is a move from Houston to LSU really doesn't change his recruiting area all that much. LSU has always been a player for top talent in the Houston area. I don't know much about Houston's recruiting class for next year, but I imagine they have some talent that Herman would bring with him. Houston is not nearly as attractive to a recruit without Herman.

Take the loser of Louisville/Houston. That game is on November 17. This fanbase is going to be really antsy in 6 weeks if nobody seems locked up by then.

No. This decision is about establishing lsu as dominant power for the next decade...not just 2017 recruiting class. If Herman says yes you let him come on HIS terms.

You don't want Herman's Houston recruits. His class last year was a fluke and all he had to do was basically use a family connection to get his best recruit to UH.

He will, however, be able to pick up on those Texas kids he was recruiting but who wouldn't have committed to UH. He's built those relationships I'm sure.

Dana Holgorsen. Maybe if he gets fired at WVU he will go back to OC/QB coach like he was for Texas Tech, UH, and Ok St.?

By then there may several AD's in the stands for that game.

To me, LSU can't afford to wait that long.

You haven't fired Miles and found a replacement merely to hold a single recruiting class.

LSU has three goals, every year: win the SEC West, win the SEC Championship, and go to the playoffs.

If you think a coach like Tom Herman can get LSU to accomplish those goals, you wait until February to get him. It's not about 2017, it's about the next 5-10 years.

LSU is not locking up a new coach before the end of the season unless it's coach O (which is highly highly unlikely). LSU is going to have to compete with other openings no matter which way you slice it.

Well, sorta. LSU has an advantage making a move before November. Not really sure there was advantage to do it in *September*, but here we are.

There are examples of Team A who cuts their coach loose by mid-Nov having a leg up on Team B, who cuts their coach loose in early December. Those 2-3 weeks can make a huge difference in jockeying for the hot coaches.

Heck, LSU had this rolling last year, before F'King A and our governor stuck their noses in. No, Les wasn't fired, but the decision was made and Jimbo was already reeled in.
