As an sc fan I'm disappointed they didn't at least wait til after the pac12 championship to find a new head coach. I'm so underwhelmed by this.

Holy shite
There's a absolutely ZERO argument here. If chip said no thanks, that's fine. But don't sit here and act like he's better than Chip Kelly.

you'd prefer Helton over chip?

Yes. Call me crazy, but Chip K. and other human beings are like oil and water. They just don't mix.

Helton's players want to play for him. Hard. So he's not a "name" guy with flash. Remember how SC fans reacted when Pete was hired? Weren't fricking happy. Same reaction as now x10.

Also, this means (and this is really important) that Tee Martin isn't going anywhere. He's the cornerstone of recruiting at USC, and we all know that recruiting drives potential success in college football.

Frankly, the coaches available to replace Helton didn't inspire me, so if you feel uninspired by the hire, I get it. But I'm not feeling all the doom and gloom.

Agree.

His DC, and D assistant hires, are the most imperative imo.

Helton knows how to coach the O. He has instilled a tough-minded run first philosophy I like (at least taking into account a QB that is more of a game manager than a game changer).

We'll see. But I can guarantee you any loss he has over the end of this season and the next will cause hysteria by the negaTrojans.

The players here at LSU rallied around Mike Archer, too & from most accounts, that had a lot to do with him being promoted to HC. Look where that mentality got us. As for keeping continuity going in recruiting, however keeping him as HC effects recruiting this yr, if the programs takes a dive under him, that will kill recruiting for yrs to come.

As an SC fan, I hope it's understood that expectations are sky high, especially now that we're almost at full strength numbers (sanctions were a bitch). if he doesn't meet those expectations, he's gonna get fired. If nothing else, USC has proven it will fire somebody. Maybe not gracefully, but they'll fire somebody.

There's already talk that Wilcox is being retained. I can't believe some of you are ok with this. This is a horrendous decision by Haden.

The Clay Helton hire might be the worst of any major conference school in the last decade. Not since Charlie Weis has a less qualified head coach been hired.

Im really not sure how one can argue otherwise, sans the "kids play hard for him" bulcrap

Fire him so we can hire Tee Martin in 3 years

If I'm wrong about Helton's potential to win championships at SC, I'll be the first to come back here and eat crow. But as somebody who's lived through the 90's and the Paul Hackett era as an SC fan, this is nowhere near as bad as that.

We won the South, in a year where we started off with another HC being fired a few games into the season. The Victory Bell is back where it belongs.

Perspective.

Not sure why they put such high regard in an interim finishing out the season with a good record. They have a ton of talent, it's not hard to go 6-2 there.

At least we know LSU doesn't have the worst AD in the country. That title goes to USC.
