Changes at LSU, Texas, Oregon show teams' changing priorities

At LSU, public support and the wishes of the locker room dictated the decision of the administration to hire a coach.
quote:
Laissez les bon temps rouler in Baton Rouge. Ed Orgeron got the job, and we all know how well the People's Choice worked out for LSU a year ago. Public demand extended the LSU career of Les Miles for an entire four games into this season. That's when the ardor of the fan base cooled enough for the administration to extract him without burning itself. Coach O is the new People's Choice, and he has made residents of Louisiana feel good again, being one of their own, with that Cajun-dipped voice somewhere between a growl and a diesel engine. That warm feeling well may last beyond four games into next season. But it is apparent that LSU hired Orgeron without regard for history -- his own, and the rest of major college football's since the 1960s. It's entirely possible I've missed someone. But I've identified only 19 Power 5 schools in the past 50 years that hired a head coach who had been fired or forced out by another Power 5 school. Of those 19 coaches, one won a national championship. One won a conference championship. They are the same man, Gene Stallings, in the same season, 1992, at Alabama. That's it. Only one coach won more than one division championship at his second-chance school. Yep, Stallings, who won four SEC West titles in seven seasons with the Crimson Tide. Only five of the 19 have or had a higher winning percentage at their second-chance school than the one that fired them. Only two of them finished with a winning record at the second school: Stallings and Paul Hackett, who went 19-18 in three seasons at USC and was fired for, yep, not winning enough.
quote:
And the majority of schools who hired these second-chance coaches are the schools that never win championships. But that just supports the point that LSU has colored outside the lines here. They didn't go out and hire a proven winner, the way that schools in the upper echelon of college football typically do.

Pretty good article.

We want continuity of a failed regime
Orgeron loses some recruits and then he excuses came flying out. We are stuck with him. He will coast for 3 years bc its "Miles team"

Agree, good article, but I am so tired of seeing/hearing this....
That is NOT what happened.

No...Coach O will fail with "Miles players" and his fall back excuse will be that he doesn't have "his guys"
You're already seeing the excuse with these recruits we are losing out on. "Oh that was Miles decision...O just didn't want them"
Even though 1.) Orgeron promised he would keep this class together
2.) Orgeron has been recruiting for us for 2 years so they are "his guys"

By hiring O the administration made it CLEAR that they are happy winning 8-10 games with an occasional contender
So why did we fired Miles?

Les didn't leave use with LBs, Olineman, and QBs(even though he had 2 top 100 ones committed) will be a consistent claim the next few seasons.

He lost the only losable games on our schedule after he took over this year. I think it could be said that he made a couple of obvious changes that allowed him to win a couple of games that Miles would have lost because he lost the team), effectively winning games with Miles' players.

It wasn't a failed regime, unless you set the bar so high that anything other than winning SEC and National Championships is deemed "failure". Les Miles fielded a very competitive, talented team that represented the university well for over a decade. He just slipped from "elite" status into "above average" status at the end. However, he never fielded a losing team, nor was he ever close to fielding a losing team. He wasn't a failure. We just wanted more, due to our own heightened expectations.

Something about ignoring history and it repeating or something

I don't see one team on the schedule that you can say Miles wouldn't have won in that position
Every game Orgeron won we DOMINATED in the running game. That was not the issue. We still had the same problems with O, just teams like Arky and Ole Miss were worse than they were in the past

I thought bringing Miles back last year was proof of this. I guess LSU just looked so hopelessly bad with Miles this year that he had to go. I really think the season would've spiraled out of control with Miles.

According to the reports Alleva wanted Miles gone but was overpasses
Then is given free reign on a hire and essentially chooses to re-hire Miles anyway.

I've been trying to explain this to O pumpers, and of course I've been met with idiotic responses. Miles was fired because it was decided losing 3-4 games each season is unacceptable (along with his unwillingness to change the offense). So will O be held to the same standard? I highly doubt it. His apologists will come up with every excuse imaginable.
