I know that probably 95% of all assistant coaches want to be a head coach eventually, but accepting anyone just for namesake is utterly stupid. Coordinators at power 5 schools don't take head jobs at bottom of the barrel C-USA, MAC, or Sunbelt schools. Maybe in the American or Mountain West but that depends on the school. Nothing personal against FAU but that's a springboard job for an FCS head coach or group of 5 coordinator. Kiffin should've held out another year for something bigger.

Kiffin wasn't going to get anything bigger. He's still damaged goods. This is the only way he can work his way back to a power 5 HC job. He wasn't going to repair his image by continuing to be a coordinator.

It wasn't about money for Kiffin. It was all about rebuilding his reputation as a leader for a possible power 5 head coaching job down the road.

What difference does $300K per year for two or three years make to Kiffin at this point? He's made plenty of money. He can handle making a little less at this stop in hopes that it pays off on the next one. If it doesn't work out there, he'll have no trouble finding work as a high-paid coordinator once again. It's worth the risk for him at this point. It's not like he's old.

I think there was the preception he wasn't going to get the type of job he wanted with out proving something (who knows what?) I would think he would need to be there a few years to make people comfortable they don't UT'ed

or taken this one since it was likely he wouldn't have gotten a power 5 offer....somehow I think he and his agent probably have a better perspective, based on talks with teams and people in power, of what he needs to do to get a HC job at a power 5 but what do I know

This.

Plus, I'm not wholly convinced Kiffin has the maturity and self discipline to be a HC. He's a great OC no doubt, but he was also on a very short leash under Saban who is by all accounts the most type a, most controlling coach in CFB.

I'll be curious to see how he responds to being HC now. But for the record, put me soundly in the "glad he's not at LSU" camp.

Which means what to a guy who has already made probably $20 million and he's barely into his 40's?

I'm not saying that $300K means nothing. I'm saying that in the grand scheme of his career, at 41 years old, he's willing to take that hit now in order to open up doors down the road. He's not an accountant making this gamble. He's a high-paid coach, who will always be able to get work as a high-paid coach. The point is that the lost salary is made up for by the opportunity, in his mind. I didn't realize that would be so hard to comprehend.

Braden Gall on Athlon Sports radio said that Charlie Strong was going to slay it at USF and Kiffin was going to slay everything at FAU, and he did mean everything.

If Kiffin wants to be the HC at Bama or OSU or Texas or USC or FSU or LSU in 3 years, then he needs to repair the image that he's not damaged goods.

USC and Tennesee came out and said they don't like him

Kiffin is who he is. Even if he does well, he's still the biggest douche former head coach in the last 100 years. He's had three chances at coveted jobs and has failed at all three.

He might act ok for a while but give him time and the douche will come out eventually. Any power five AD that gives him a shot gets what they deserve.

Kiffin has never proven himself anywhere. Where's he's been successful there was already a successful coaching staff in place. I'm VERY interested in seeing how he does this time around. If he crashes he's done for a very long time.
