Virginia football head coach Bronco Mendenhall announced today (Dec. 12) the hiring of eight assistant coaches. Former East Carolina head coach Ruffin McNeill will join six members of the current staff at BYU: Robert Anae (Ah-NIGH), Mark Atuaia (Ah-too-igh-ah), Jason Beck, Garett Tujague (TOO-jay), Nick Howell and Kelly Poppinga (PUH-ping-guh). UVA wide receivers coach Marques Hagans remains on the staff.

McNeill will be the assistant head coach/inside linebackers coach, while Anae will be the offensive coordinator and inside receivers coach. Atuaia will be the running backs coach, Beck will be the quarterbacks coach, Tujague will the offensive line coach, Howell will be the secondary coach and Poppinga will be the special teams coordinator and outside linebackers coach. Hagans will continue to be the Cavaliers’ wide receivers coach.

It's basically all of BM's staff + Ruffin and he retained one member from Mike London's staff: Marques Hagans. He will continue to coach WR's.

Interesting move given the new area. I would have thought he would have retained a few more of the Virginia natives to help with local recruiting.

Yeah I think he will struggle to recruit, at least early on. Getting McNeil will be a big help though. Anyone with 757 ties?

Robert Anae was a candidate for the BYU job, so that's not happening.

Will be interesting how these guys recruit ACC country with no ties to the area.

If BM can turn BYU into a powerhouse he will do wonders at UVA

Good for McNeil. What was ECU's reason for getting rid of him?

Mendenhall must have ice water in his veins. Don't think I've ever seen him get worked up

Game/clock management, poor discipline on the field, and starting the last two seasons off strong before falling off sharply the last half of the year. Personally I would have given him one more year considering we had key injuries at the QB and OL positions but it is what it is.

I'm glad he got picked up somewhere. He'll always be a Pirate and I'm sure he'll do well at UVA.
