would Chip Kelly have made a difference for oregon?
Posted by 632627 on 1/13/15 at 8:21 am01
I think this loss was on helfrich and staff, the team just didn't seem focused and ready, in addition to some poor play calling and coaching decisions. In 2010, against auburn, oregon was completely outclassed in the trenches, and it was darron thomas(probably the worst qb oregon has had in the last 15 years) against cam newton, yet Kelly's team only lost by 3. Oregon had so many opportunities last night, and with 1 exception, couldn't make a play on offense(dropped 3rd down passes) or defense(allowing 3rd and long conversions) when they needed one. The red zone execution was awful. I really don't think there was any talent gap between the teams, just the biggest coaching mismatch in the short history of "national championship" games.

Did Urban Meyer make a difference for OSU?
YES
YES
Chip Kelly doesn't play on the DL or LB, huh? I don't think he would've stopped OSU from running for over 250 yards. OSU had 4 turnovers and won by 20+. Seriously. Think about that. Oregon was just way overmatched here.

Oregon has never had the horses to stop a power running game. It's always been their Achilles heel. If a team can just run you over, you're usually going to lose.

This says it all. Turnovers were 4-0 (until the last play) and OSU still won by 20+.
If those two teams play in mid-October, Oregon wins by 20. But Ohio St from December on was unbeatable. They were by far the best at the end of the season.

well on paper this was worse, helfrich vs meyer. miles at least had a national title on his resume, going against saban's 2 at the time. But miles gameplan that night was a lot worse than helfrich last night.

No Oregon cannot stop the run period.

ohio state WON that game. Oregon did not LOSE it. the only truth in your post was that Oregon was completely outclassed in the trenches. simply put, ohio state was the better team by far. osu committed FOUR turnovers, three of them were just lucky as hell for Oregon (not caused by the defense) and still dominated them.
ohio state is a complete team. theiy play great defense and special teams and are very balanced on offense with a great running game. these are the essential elements necessary to win the NC.
as the announcers put it, oregons offense is not built to come from behind or to convert 3rd downs consistently. they use deception and gimmicks to confuse the defense and usually get their first downs before 3rd down even arrives. and they score so quickly that their defense spends the majority of the game on the field. never has the weaknesses of this type of offense been more exposed than last night.

quote:This is key. A big part of the red zone problems stemmed from playcalling. For whatever reason, they kept trying to force runs inside on first and sometimes second down, essentially wasting downs. Then they'd get in 3rd and longs and couldn't convert. Oregon certainly had the firepower to win a shootout, but the mistakes and dumbass playcalling set them in too much of a deficit. They could have won the game, but drops and poor coaching decisions prevented it.
They had key drops and didn't execute in the red zone.

this was my thought exactly. oregon is up 7-0 driving in the first quarter and who knows what happens if the wr doesn't drop a pass. obviously that isn't the coaches fault but oregon i believe had 4 or 5 red zone possessions and only found the end zone once.

And against LSU in the following game. And against Harbaugh-built Stanford teams as well. This is a pattern and one has to wonder if Oregon can even attract the type of athlete you need to win a NC.
