They tried to hire Miles and ended up with another coach from Big10. Any idea why?

The two teams they haven't been able to get over in the West are LSU & Bama. Both have a B1G run first with a big O'line and play solid defense philosophy to win games.

If you can't beat 'em, join 'em

Honestly these Ark fans are trying to support this hire but everyone knows it is an odd fit.

I think the push for Miles had nothing to do with his Big 10 connection. I think it was partially due to Jerry Jones thinking his money could buy anything, especially with his alleged connection to Miles, and with the Arky administration needing to show the fans that they were willing to go after a big gun before settling for someone with a little less juice.

However....it is true that the biggest obstacles to anyone rising up in the West are Saban and Miles, both of which run a game built on power running and defense, which were indeed traditional attributes of B10 football. it could be that the Arky folks figured that the only way to win the West would be to beat Bama and LSU at that game. Of course, one could certainly argue whether that's the right strategy for the piggies.

BB has a history of doing "more with less" at Wisky, that's the kind of coach we have to have. Someone that can spot underrated talent and develop them into great players.

Also by all accounts he runs a pretty clean program and doesn't put up with BS, we needed that after Petrino fiasco.

It was unexpected, but it is a great hire.

I think BB will be a good fit..

It's also funny that nobody thinks we will be able to run the football. It has happened before.

I'll take your word for Jerry's influence (or lack thereof). All I know is that he was mentioned in several sources as being one of the reasons y'all were making a push for Les. Could be writers just dreaming things up. Wouldn't be the first time....

Yeah, I remember a few Arky teams with some pretty decent running backs.

I don't see any reason why he wouldn't be a good hire. I think a lot of people are scratching their heads simply because he wasn't on anyone's radar. Some also say (with some justification) that it will be tough to beat Bama and LSU at their own game, given the recruiting advantages both enjoy. The idea is that you would need a different approach, like a Texas A&M. Don't know if I agree with it, but that's the argument.

Apparently the Arky "strategy"was to hire the first coach that said yes...eventually somebody had to be that person.

The fact that his name is Bret and he can't win bowls, big games or beat bell cow programs is not even important at this point.

They are just hoping to get bowl eligible.

without jff, a&m's "approach" ain't shite. a&m win's 7 or 8 games w/o him. the guy is not only special but won the heisman because he indeed was the player that meant the most to his team. there is no "system" or "approach" that runs itself; player excecution is the factor influencing success or failure.
