What did Michigan do wrong with Rich Rod?

I'm having a hard time understanding how it didn't work out there. He is clearly an awesome coach. Did he just need more time? Seems like he turned Arizona around quickly. Did he not have some resource that he is usually given?

Most importantly, how do we know anyone can be successful there after that?

He didn't have the personnel to run his offense and he wasn't a Meeeeechigan man.

ETA: At least that is how I remember it.

Rich Rod needed time to develop Denard Robinson into a QB to fit his system. Denard improved the year after Rich Rod was fired. Michigan pulled the fire trigger too early IMHO.

One theory is he didn't have D coordinator Casteel, although there are one or two guys on here who think Casteel and/or that system suck, too.

Another is that Michigan administrative people undermined him, which has some truth, but I don't think affected his performance on the field all that much.

Another is that his offensive style doesn't work in the B1G for whatever reason, which I'm not sure how I feel about. There are spreads and then there are spreads.

I also think he would have done well in 2011 with that soft schedule and posted at least 9-3.

He was like 3-21 in conference games or something like that. He had plenty of time. He never got along with boosters and alumni and he came in saying he was gonna run things his way and he didn't care about the past and the Michigan way.

When he went to Arizona he went as a humbled man seeking a new opportunity and Arizona had hardly any football tradition to have hanging over him.

Needed the players to fit the system but wasn't given time to get them.

0-6 against OSU and MSU. Throw in a 3-9 season and there isn't much to say.

Maybe he could have used more time, but his absolute stubbornness about what he wanted to run on the defensive side of the ball really hurt him.

There isnt a single university in the country that would have given him more time. He had a .33 winning percentage in conference, and was 0-6 vs the rivals. His defenses got worse every year, and his offense was shut down by any legit D.

Michigan was much more of a dumpster fire when RR arrived than many people choose to believe. They lacked talent on both sides of the ball and brought in a coach with a system that was a complete 180 from what they ever had.

RR installed his offense but never got the defense up to par. It may have been a different story had Casteel joined him at UM like he did in Arizona.

There is also the "shadow" regime up there apparently which has its hands in everything UM football related and apparently many of them did not like RR because he was not a "Michigan man." I have no doubt that if RR were still the HC of Michigan, they would certainly be in the hunt right there with Ohio State.

This is true. It's just a really weird situation. The pressure to win quickly is just incredible now. Alex Ferguson is the most successful soccer coach ever, and he struggled for years at United before turning it around. He is open that he would have never lasted that long in today's world.

People just choose to ignore the situation that led to the previous HC getting fired when a school brings in a new coach who doesn't immediately succeed.

No, he retired. Lloyd could still be the coach if he wanted to.
