Nick Saban would have excelled at recruiting anywhere. He pulled in some great talent at Michigan State, that would have otherwise went to Michigan or Ohio State.

He was hired before the age of message boards, how can you possibly know what LSU fans thought of Saban when he was hired back in 1999?

LOL....like there was never a way to determine the popularity or validity of a rumor of factual event without the internet? That's rich!

Nobody is saying he isn't or wasn't an excellent recruiter.....but the recruiting area you are talking about is one where people were familiar with Saban having been an assistant Kent State in the late 70's, Ohio State in the early 80's, at Michigan State in the mid 80's, Toledo in 1990 and 4 years with the Cleveland Browns. When he became the head coach at MSU in 1995 he had those "connection". He also inherited a pretty good pipeline from talent rich South Florida.

I really didn't know what LSU fans thought of the Saban hire when he was first announced as their head coach. All I knew is what I read in the newspapers and what little online content there was back then. Very few of those publications included fan reaction to a hire.

I lived several hundred miles to the north of ya'll in 2000 so I wasn't exactly plugged into the pulse of the LSU fan base in those days.

All you really need to know is that A LOT people in the Deep South don't like "Yankees".

The reaction was "Nick Saban?" "Is that the guy LSU beat in the Independence Bowl a few years back?" "Could we have done better than him?"

Did Nick Saban have connections in the SEC when he was hired away from Michigan State? Urban Meyer away from Utah? The "HAT" is a Michigan Man? Surround Jones with a good staff and think he can't win at UT? I believe he will do alright...

well, saban hired guys with southeast connections. He hired Pete Jenkins, ex lsu and au guy, Jimbo coached at Au, Muschamp was from Georgia, dick tricket was from the southeast, mike hayward had coached at lsu and texas, lance thompson had s.e. connections as well.

I don't think you understood my intent. I was not even referring to LSU, or any other SEC program's recruiting territory. I was referring to the fact that Nick Saban has said many times that it isn't so much connections as it is ability to recruit. He, like Les Miles, believes in his method that has served him at Toledo, Michigan State, LSU, and now Alabama. It works. That's the question on Butch Jones. Did he shows flashes of recruiting ability at Cincinnati?
