I'm not judging, I'm open to thoughts. I don't know much about the guy other than a cursory look at his CV.

His D wasn't great at USC, true or false? Only there one year.

His defenses at Cal didn't seem great.

Made Super Bowl several years ago but everyone says it was all due to the O; fired after the game; unable to land another top gig.

Bounced around several places. Can someone add some details and perspective about the guy that could be our next DC?

TIA.

At both spots he turned shitty defenses into the top in the conference....

This... Not to mention that USC was under scholarship limitations at the time

Strengths he knows a lot about football and has been very well trusted by many coaches in both the NFL And College.

Weaknesses, we aren't really sure if he be a good recruiter.

Pendergast given the talent LSU has would be a scary defense. We may be the top of the SEC year after year.

the only concern at-least for Miles is that he won't recruit well in the SEC. No matter how good the Xs and Os are we still need talent to back it up. We may get alittle behind the recruiting ball so to speak with him. We may not either. If CP wants to come here the only reason he wouldn't if Miles isn't convinced he would be a plus for recruiting.

Excellent if true.

So at Cal and USC he took over defenses that were near the bottom in the PAC and made them the best defenses in the conference?

There is a 25 page stickied thread on Pendergast on the Rant. Recommended.

This has been posted before but it's a pretty good bio and resume for the guy. Hard not to be excited at the possibility of landing him after reading this.

People love him now but I'm sure a year or so from now they'll say they always thought it was a bad hire..

Midway through the 2001 season after LSU had dropped to 4-3 and 2-3 in the SEC, a large portion of LSU fans wanted Nick Saban shite-canned. He mentioned it on the radio at the time saying that his daughter asked him if they were going to have to move again.

Point being...LSU fans, generally, are pretty much morons. So yes...if he is hired at some point before too long he'll suck too.

To add to the want to hire him, The Washington Redskins are supposedly interested in talking with him.

I'll just leave this right here...

quote:

Whatever the scheme, Pendergast says the most important thing to being a good defensive coordinator is being able to adjust your system and understanding your own strengths and weaknesses. "And," he says, "being able to fit your players in it and knowing how to make adjustments during the course of a game depending on how someone's trying to attack you."

Neither was Chavis, so any production would be an improvement.

I was going to come in here and destroy you with the stats that were obviously there since the RANT thinks this would be amazing, but I'm rethinking after checking them for myself.

He came into a UCLA team that was giving up around 21 a game.. and gave up 32, 31, and 27 his 3 years.
USC was giving up 24 and his team gave up 21 per game.
Although his results may not be stellar, I think his track record speaks to ability..
He did coach in a more offensively focused PAC 12, and he'd have more talent here to work with.
other perks..

1. I think it would make us the only CFB team able to claim that we had our offensive and defensive coordinators coach teams that were in the super bowl.

2. He makes getting Orgeron on the staff easier.

Cool thanks.

I don't think it's a home run hire. I don't think it's an upgrade over Chavis but I'm not sure. Not sure it's even a lateral move.

Still, we could do a lot worse with Steele, Diaz, and Peveto.

Pendergast may be the best choice available.

I was going to post the same quote. And with his NFL experience and connections I'd say it would be a home run hire.

This is something i'd expect Cam Cameron and Les to say on April fools when asked about their offensive philosophies
