Here is a list of the top revenue producing Atlethic Departments. Its as of the 08/09 school year, but it would not have changed much since then.
1. Texas $138,459,149
2. Ohio State $119,859,607
3. Florida $108,309,060
4. Alabama $103,934,873
5. LSU $100,077,884
These are from public records. I'm certain you are aware of non-public entities that contribute to university activities (LSU's TAF is an example) that are not reflected in those numbers. My reference to the oil wells owned by the university is relevant to the fact that the academic endowments are not (as) reliant on athletics as they are at other universities. When you look at the resources of a particular athletic department, you have to include incumberances. The fact that oil revenue (or any other for that matter) does not flow directly into the athletic department does not indicate that those revenues are not somehow factored in the overall financial structure. Joe Jamail made significant contributions to the law school ( Joseph D. Jamail, Jr. Pavilion) and yet, has his name on the football field. But, my assumptions could be wrong. Forget I said anything.

It doesnt matter if $abun stays or leaves bama just as long as bama has to spend even more money on $abun.
The noose will get even tighter.

He's a very wealthy attonrey, I assume he gave money to the various things he has his name on.

Its not that you are wrong, but you are looking at it the wrong way. you are treating it like a zero sum game. Just because their AD makes the most money, and their university endowment is 2nd to Harvard doesn't mean they can simply afford to pay what others can not. Put another way, someone with a net worth of $1B can afford pretty much everything someone with a net worth of $2B can.
As for things like the TAF, Texas is not the only school with rich alum. If that were a factor, the Stanford would blow every one away.

You retards need to give it up.

The other important point is, they have no need to pay Nick Saban or anyone else $10M a year. Its not like their program has been struggling for years and needs to get back on top. Yeah, they sucked last year and dont look much better this year, but the year before they were in the BCS CG. While message board and SEC fans may not think Mack Brown is a great coach, the people that hire/fire at Texas do and he's brought in a ton of money, which fans that mock winning 10 games while only winning 2 Big 12 titles don't get.
If Mack retires, I suspect they will hire a good coach and pay him a lot, just like they pay Mack, but they are not gonna just out bid every one and there's no need for that besides.

He did it the last 3 years at LSU.

Would Bobby Petrino be hands off for UT with a 15 million dollar buyout?
Posted on 11/22/11 at 6:31 pm to Chd1478
I don't think Saban actually goes to Texas, but it makes sense in a way if UT wants to get the Longhorn Network off the ground. It would be a really good move. I'm not surprised they are talking about luring a coach like Saban, but I don't think it will happen.

You haven't seen Saban up close and personal like we have. Offer the man a few bucks and he'd run over his children's puppy.
When was the last time he left a job for more money? He could have been hired away from Bama by now if money was his motive.

Texas has the 4th largest endowment fund only behind Harvard, Yale and Princeton
Bama is not even on the Forbes list

Dude, he got a raise every year while at LSU all the time flirting with every single NFL position that came along. I'm not sure if the Gumps offered more than he was making at Miami, but have to assume they did. In any event quitting Miami and having a job lined up is a lot better than having his arse fired which is exactly what was going to happen.

Leveraging demand for your skills to get a raise isn't the same thing as being the mythical money whore Saban is portrayed to be on this bored. In fact if you don't do the same thing in your job then you either aren't in demand or are underpaid.
He leaves for opportunities. The money that follows is a simple supply-demand equation.

tejas's inner steinbrenner is revealing itself. that would bring saban up to age 71, if true. i hope it happens for a number of reasons.

Just compare the two campuses and it's really no comparison at all. Texas has the cash

He left for less money per year ($4 mil vs. $5 mil) but more guaranteed years (8 vs. 2).

I don't think Saban would jump. This is likely just another Jimmy Sexton production. Get the talk going, talk bigger money, and negotiate a raise, from which the agent takes a commission. Sexton pulls this crap every year and Saban puts the $$$ in his pocket.
