Isn't a clause if HC leaves assistant contracts are null standard?

Seems like that would be the case with all schools otherwise those schools would be on the hook for overlapping salaries if a coach were to leave or be fired. Makes no sense to me. I can understand the 4th year and maybe money but supposedly its not about money.

Usually at the universities discretion.

Don't understand why this would piss Chavis off. Would he really want to stay under contract with LSU still if he had no idea who his new boss would be?

Apparently Chief wanted loyalty to the school and not the coach. He got burned by TN when Fulmer was canned. If Alleva lost one of the top Defensive Coordinators in college football for this goofy "what if" scenario then he is a fool.
Get him signed and work thru it with Chief of Miles does leave.

he got burned just like any assistant coach gets burned when the head coach is shown the door. schools do not hire new head coaches and then tell them they have to keep the other coaches still under contract. no head coach would agree to a deal where they weren't given the freedom to select their own staff. regardless, doubt chavis would have stayed even if offered by kiffin. he wasn't going to stay without fulmer

Coaching staff at LSU seems too cozy. Miles hasn't outright fired anyone has he? It's always been a point them to the next place kind of thing, correct?

Really b/c one of the conditions to Miles' hiring is that he had to keep Jimbo Fisher on as OC.
Usually, the incoming staff keeps one of the assistants to maintain some continuity. If Miles left on his own then the AD can work with the new coach to keep continuity intact. If there is a home run hire that insists on picking a new DC instead of inheriting one of the top DC's in college football buy out his contract at that point.
Don't lose him today over a what if scenario that may or may not play out in the next four years.
This tells me that those in the know believe that Mile's plans to retire soon or his seat is about to get a little warm.

I think it tells me more that Chavis and Miles didn't see eye to eye or Chavis and Alleva didn't see eye to eye. Realistically I think that Miles and Alleva are in agreement that maybe Chavis was a little too high maintenance and Miles has someone in mind.
Honestly, I would like for Chavis to stay and our offensive staff to be feeling some heat for this crappy passing game we fielded. At a minimum I would rather lose another game or two with Harris starting to get him the reps for next season. I think Jennings is at his ceiling.

Miles fired Stud just a year ago, dude
Posted on 12/30/14 at 9:01 pm to Professor Parks
Stud left to "pursue other opportunities" and had the job with Maryland.

Verge Ausberry offered him the contract he balked at. He is the AD over Football. Alleva stepped in with amended language after Ausberry tripped over his d!ck.
But to be honest, I think Mils was ready to move on. Ausberry offered that contract with Miles' input. I think Hat had Verge do his dirty work. He was coaxed out and Alleva looks foolish. But this appears to be an insider job.

He's mad because it has never been in his deals.
It's not standard... but neither way is uncommon.

No, but he would want to be paid a minimum of one year of his contract like most DC & OCs, and not six months like a position coach. I doubt that's what pushed him out, but it was a ridiculous move that could have been seen by a slap in the face.

You do realize this is the exception rather than the rule, right?
You're a head coach with a certain philosophy, but you cant hire your own coordinators to align with that philosophy? I mean, why don't we just give him a clause that says the head coach can't fire him?
I'm no fan of Alleva, but if this is true, then I support his decision not to budge.

5 years ago no, today its going in that direction. Just like 10 years ago it was unheard of for a assistant to have a multi year contract.

Yes I realize this is not standard. All I'm saying is that assuming Miles really wants Chief to remain on staff and Chief really wants to remain at LSU you don't let him walk on a clause that you are unlikely to invoke.
I seriously doubt that Miles will be shown the door in the next four years. If he was to leave in the next four years on his own then you work with the next coach to retain Chief ( assuming he is still fielding top notch defenses). If a homerun hire won't come b/c Chief has to remain then terminate his contract then.
If the program were to decline to the point where it was necessary to terminate Miles then you clean house with the staff as well.
