Seems like so far he's just bringing over all his boys from Cincy.

I'm not sure a Big East coaching staff can compete in the SEC.

I hate when people say that, where the hell do you think all the SEC coaches came from?

He was successful at Cinci with that staff, I don't see why he shouldn't bring them.

he did retain charlie strong, though

it's going to be tough bringing in a bunch of big east guys to the SEC in terms of recruiting

Keeping Charlie Strong and bringing in Greg Mattison was Urban's best coaching staff decisions when he was hired.

Instead of creating a thread and having idiots cyber-holler at me...Do any of you UT fans think BJ was a good hire?

He definitely was not a bad one, but in a year i considered a pretty fertile coaching carousel, i thought Butch was kinda ehh.

He wasn't that successful for starters and the big east is as down as it's ever been. His teams always had comparable or better talent than the teams they played. Now he is going to be competing against better players and better coaches? This will be a disaster

Sumlin brought in a bunch of CUSA coaches and did just fine in year one.

Honestly, I think Jones is a very good coach. But the SEC has gotten to a level where you need to make a home run hire in order to compete year in and year out. I don't think Tennessee did that.

When you're competing on the field and in the recruiting game against the likes of Nick Saban, Les Miles, Mark Richt, Will Muschamp, and Steve Spurrier, you need a guy with much more cache than Butch Jones.

And to your last point...Especially if your home recruiting ground is the state of Tennessee.

Exactly. That's why I think Jones needs to go out and make great hires at the coordinator positions. Elite recruiters and guys with major college football/NFL experience rather then just bringing his guys over from Cincy.

Well, this was on the rant as the rumored staff (defense):

DC: Brian VanGorder (Auburn DC)
DL: Steve Stripling (Cincinnati DL coach and interim HC)
LB: John Jancek (Cincinnati DC and LB Coach)
Secondary: Willie Martinez (Auburn Secondary)

I just don't know wtf to think about it.

I take it back. That's even worse than just bringing his guys over from Cincy.

I am pissed about letting Pittman go. He was a great coach who vastly improved the OL along with helping us have a pretty good rushing attack this year.

Were Les Miles and Richt home run hires? I don't think so. Where do you think coaches like Saban, Meyer and Spurrier got started at?

Alot of people are throwing out that Dooley beat his Cincy team. That was 1 game, and with the athletes that UT has. They should beat a school like Cincy 9 times out of 10.

Tennessee took a chance, and he could end up being great or end up being the 2nd coming of Dooley. That was really all they could do.

This. Pete Carroll was USC's fourth choice.Even Saban coming to LSU was not a home run hire. "You mean the guy that got beat by Gerry Dinardo?"

The easy answer is that only time will tell. But honestly, thats the hard answer too. It would be easy to say hell yes, great hire - or - what a boneheaded hire because he only coached at Cinn and W. Migh.

All you can do is look at the facts. He has won everywhere he has been. Yes thats only 6 years of a track record, so it is not a long proven track record.

So far I am impressed with what I have seen and I am hopeful. The football programs has the "bones" to be great again. (Great facilities, great alumni base and great support from admin.) What he needs now is to put the meat on the bones - ie talent.

I agree on all points, but only we shall see in a few years.

Saban wasnt considered a homerun hire at first at lsu. Neither were miles or richt. And muschamp? He was a coordinator with no head coaching experience. People ripped that hire at the time and, in fact, many gators fans werent on the muschamp bandwagon at points this season....just look at the attendance for further proof.
