Does 'bama's D staff need an overhaul?

What say ye? It seems to me that since the 2012 season ended, good teams with time to prepare have given bama fits. It seems that the Saban/Smart D has been figured out. I make the analogy to a triple option offense -- hell to prepare for in a week, but if you have a few weeks and great athletes, you can destroy it.

44 pts to Auburn*, 42 to Ohio State, 45 to Oklahoma (2013), and 34 to Auburn (2013)*

*We all know Auburn prepares for Alabama nonstop.

You get the best recruits in the country every year but your whole defensive philosophy is designed to stop teams like LSU, Arkansas, Georgia.. power running teams.

You're safeties are very good at stopping the run but can't cover at all and the same can be said for your linebackers. Saban needs to go after different kinds of athletes and adjust his philosophy alot more when he faces spread teams

We may *typically* be good at run-stopping, but in 2 of those games I mentioned we gave up nearly 300 rushing yards, and the run game was the main reason we got our asses kicked (although the OSU game was more fo a balanced offensive attack).

Rushing yardage surrendered in the games I mentioned:

OSU 2014: 281 [OSU Run game dominated, though they passed very well too]
Auburn 2014: 174 [AU passing attack Dominated, but 174 is still a lot of rushing yards]
Oklahoma 2013: 80 something [All passing all game]
Auburn 2013: 296 [all rushing all game]

Alabama has consistently struggled against teams that run a dynamic spread. College football is ALL about matchups. Alabama's defense is perfect against a pro-style/ power running team.

Saban is damn good at setting up his defenses to crush the opponents. The secondary was not very good for you this year. I was wondering if Saban had been overly committed to things outside of football since the secondary wasn't as good as usual.

Overall, there were only a couple of serious studs on the D. I'm sure Saban will bring in and coach up some good talent. Maybe he'll change up defensive formations a little to kill the spread.

This.

Alabama's defense can stop the run against an LSU team that lines it up and tries to punch it into a brick wall over and over.

But a team like AU, y'all struggle because they spread you out and run it right at you with creative and unpredictable plays.

Smart needs to frick off, but it's Saban's defense.

Bama fricked.

They struggled stopping our run game for a good chunk of this year's game. Didn't we end up with over 180 yards on the ground. Not bad, in my opinion.

Alabama needs to fire whoever coaches their DBs.

They suck.

This is the reason I would've liked to see Bama in 2011 play LSU's schedule. WV and Oregon would've given those gigantic LBs fits.

UF may get Bo Davis. I would hate to be a DL coach in Sabans scheme.

The O’s are becoming more exotic than ever. Bama has the best athletes on D of anyone so if they’re having this much difficulty then I’d say it’s a scheme thing. IMO, Saban/Smart are trying to defend unconventional O’s using conventional schemes and it’s not working.

It's how they transform their players bodies. Their speed in the front 7 is laughable.

Yep. Bama's '11 D was incredible but seeing how Bama's struggled with similar O's it makes one wonder.

No. Kirby Smart is still Kirby Smart. LC was our only good Safety this year and our two most talented Corners didn't start. Cyrus will be great next year and TB should start. MH will find a role and EJ will move to Star or Safety.

You don't move on from a guy like Kirby Smart. He's done too much for us, and he's a big key in recruiting.

Also wanna keep Bo Davis. He helped our DL take the next step.

No - you just need some tweeks in the secondary and a few quicker LBs.

don't know - however Pawl was throwing Smart under the bus yesterday, while whistling Dixie on L.K.'s knob. He still had Nicky walking across the Tenn river bare foot with the water only getting his heels wet.

Smart is a figurehead for Saban. If Saban doesn't bolt for the NFL the best thing he could do is cut ties with Smart and bring in a new DC to actually run the defense, but he probably won't.
