Probably a "yes" man.

Wonder how much they'll pay him

Tomsula was a candidate for the Vikings job recently and supposedly finished second for the Pitt Panthers job.

The dude is a wonderful motivator, the players love him.

Check out this video about him.

Check out what current and former players are saying about him. Great hire in my opinion.

makes you wonder.

the 49ers won a lot of games under Harbaugh yet apparently Harbaugh and management couldn't stay on the same page.

should be a real challenge for Tomsula to match the recent success they've had.

Alex Marvez?@alexmarvez

Source tells @NFLonFOX that @49ers plan to part ways with all assistant coaches except RBs coach Tom Rathman

To not hang on to Donatell would be a mistake. He should be DC.

this is scary more than anything. "motivator" coaches rarely ever work. herm edwards, dave campo, raheem morris, and mike singletary (remember him?) are great examples of this type of coach. want to know another common variable? most went from positional coach to HC, too.

I think he is one of those guys who is just a born leader. He won as a Head Coach in NFL Europe too.

being a born leader is only part of being a HC. he's never been a DC which raises severe questions about his strategical mind, which is the most important part of being a HC. he's never had to scheme an NFL defense in response to an NFL offense. that's worrisome

I tend to agree with that analysis, but Jim Harbaugh has never been a coordinator at any level either. Actually, I don't think John Harbaugh has ever been a coordinator either.

he worked his way up as a HC literally from the bottom. i remember when he first got into coaching and there was a plan in place

he worked for his dad to learn the basics of being a college coach and recruiter. pretty sure he was unpaid at this stop. then he went back to the NFL to get a higher level of Xs and Os. then he went to San Diego (either real cheap or free, iirc) to start really low and get recruiting ties on his preferred coast.

not really a comparable path b/c he went through the "head coach track" of career development

Singletary was a respected and loved position coach who got totally exposed at Xs and Os in time and lost the respect of his locker room. Tomsula is not immune to this same fate.

This.

It's why no one ever hires the "interim" coach that rally's and wins some games

It's a lot easier to be a players favorite coach when you're in no real position of power.

seems like the yorks wanted 3 things

1. a yes man they could control
2. a positive head coach
3. a guy players would love (at the time of the thire)

they're about to see why being an insufferable dick who assembles a great Xs and Os staff is vastly superior

It's been a cluster frick from start to finish and front to back.

If they knew it was Tomsula all along, why the frick not offer him the job the day after Harbaugh left?

If they had done that, a decent team of co-ordinators could be put in place around him, but now, 17 days into the coachinng merry go round, positions have been filled and candidates taken.

We MAY end up with Chudzinski at OC which would be good, but had this all been tied up sooner we could've gone after Linehan or someone else.

As for DC we're going to get Tarver by the looks of it, the guy who had the Raiders up to the 32nd ranked scoring defense.

We lost Greg Roman who was responsible for the running plays, but kept Geep Chryst, who was responsible for the putrid red zone offense.

They took the time to run after Gase, they had 6 or more other interviews including Vic Fangio, the D co-ordinator who kept the D together somehow last year.

The two press conferences that have been held since Harbaugh left were just bumblefrick bullshite. Jed was dumb enough to say that the new coach would need to win the Superbowl within two years and that it was super important to win with class. Well next time anyone has the gall to get arrested or party with a stripper, that's getting thrown back in his face.

Today's press conference was apparently even worse. Baalke had to speak over Tomsula, which just sets a terrible image of how the organization works.

I won't lie, I am not blown away with the coaches available this offseason. My choices would've gone McDaniels, Shanahan, Fangio with a decent coordinator, Gase. But I don't think Jed or Baalke are smart enough to pick a fall guy while they pick their real coach, and when he's gonne in one or two years, we're gonna have lost a great d-line coach.
