I also could not answer this, but some of my favorites not named are:

Of Mice and Men
Old Man and the Sea (named already)
The Count of Monte Cristo
Catcher in the Rye
Great Expectations
1984

I do think the Divine Comedy might be the Greatest thing written, but it is not a novel.

Some newer ones I liked:

Life of PI
The Alchemist

And the funniest book I have ever read:
Lamb: The Gospel According the Biff, Jesus's childhood best friend.

I picked up Don Quixote the other day, it was like $5 at Barnes and Noble. I'm looking forward to it but it sure is a big book.

I mean, is this even a question? The Da Vinci Code and it isn't close. Except for 50 Shades of Grey. That's the only one that's close though. Well maybe Angels and Demons. But that's it.

Unfortunately I've never read it, but a lot of people whose opinion I hold in high regard consider The Brothers Karamazov to be it.

My vote would go to To Kill a Mockingbird. The way Lee created the lovable character of Scout, forced the reader to see the issue of race through her eyes and in turn challenge their own views, was brilliant. Especially given the time it was written.

The Brothers Karamazov is certainly an underrated gem in this discussion and would be my vote.

I'm a sucker for The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn though. I'd say Frankenstein over Dracula, much better novel. Moby Dick is right up there.

And, personally because my favorite period is American Romanticism, I'd add Poe's only novel, The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym. Few people can write a narrator like Poe. It's a magnificent little novel that many people just plain miss out on.

For me, it's difficult to top Lonesome Dove.

certainly my favorite book but not sure the best ever written.

I think parameters have to be given, as this is too broad of a question.

James Joyce Ulysses is consensus best novel ever written by "critics" but frick that, it is unreadable.

Gone With The Wind - Margaret Mitchell

The Godfather - Mario Puzo

As great as both films were, the novels they were based on were even better. I read The Godfather in like a day and a half when I was in college...just couldn't put it down.

Fahrenheit 451 isn't even a top 5 Bradbury book

Martian chronicles, Dandelion wine, something wicked, The October country, and Illustrated man could all be put before Fahrenheit. Just because they make kids read it in school because of it's pro book message doesn't make it some great novel.

I'm going to throw in Lolita as a top 5 book just so I have something to contribute
