Catch 22

I may need to give it another shot, but it just seemed like there was some underlying satire/humor that I wasn't getting.

Moby Dick. The style of the time was heavily descriptive with paragraphs devoted to describing a single room. While it certainly paints the author's picture into the mind of the reader it also kills pacing when done to this extent. I made it as far as Ishmael making it onto the Pequod then bailed.

I hated this for about the first 120 pages, then it finally got more interesting and I loved it. I tried starting Good Omens and I'm about 150 pages into that, and had to stop because I couldn't stand it. I've read two other books in full since then.

Damn, going to have to strongly disagree with this one. To each his own but this may be one of my top 5 favorites. Thought it was incredible.

On the Road

They were all a bunch of bums who mooched off of others and always thought they were so damn smart. I didn't like any of the characters. I stopped reading after about 3/4ths of the book.

Yeah I can't get through Jules Verne or Melville. Too tedious.

Slaughterhouse 5 - read it. Hated it. So it goes...
Catch 22 - FUBAR
Moby Dick - Mind-numbing detail; a modern re-write and somewhat trimmed-down update of the theme could have potential - probably has been done, I just don't know what/who.
A Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy - Disappointing; just seemed like pages and pages of silly hipster SF.

First book is by far the weakest and least interesting, focusing on Det. Joe Miller and Holden who may be the most boring characters. The rest of the Rocinante crew and new characters introduced since then are fantastic, while the overall story has gotten bigger and more interesting. You ought to think about jumping in at book 2.

I completely agree with this. First book was crappy noir.

Anything by Steven King.

His pedantic dialog and over description of a scene is irksome.

I don't remember the names of the books but I've given up on books by:

Grisham
James Patterson
Kay Scarpetta
James Lee Burke

I'd read several by all but Patterson and liked them at one time. But I doubt I'll read any of them again.

This was my opinion at first. I even created a thread on here about it.

The start of the book was like walking through molasses. It was overly detailed to the point of being mind numbing.

I'm about 800 pages in and I'm really enjoying it now. The first 200-300 pages were just brutal.

I bought Girl With Dragon Tattoo a couple years ago and never seem to get through the first couple chapters whenever I try to pick it up from time to time.

James Lee Burke is one of my fave pop writers; surprised you can't get into his stuff based in LA. He does sometimes come across as a preachy alcoholic, though. Esp. in more recent titles.

The western based books I have not read too much.

I liked James Lee Burke's early books, they are very good. But the preaching you mentioned increasingly worked it's way into his novels. And he seemed to run out of ideas, eventually he just got stale and I'd had enough.

I remember thinking the first half of the book was very dull, but I couldn't put it down after that. I think I stayed up super late to finish it. Amazing second half.

I made it through, but I hated it for that reason. Needs some serious editing.

The Scarlet Letter. I think I may have made it to the end of the first page and quit it. Never went back.
