Not really like the ones you mentioned, but I really like the Red Rising series.

Stormlight is my favorite right now. The rest aren't in any real order.
ASOIAF
Ravens Shadow
Night Angel
First Law Trilogy
Red Rising
The Broken Empire
Rothfuss, to me, is an amazing writer with no true direction. I don't think he knows what story he is telling. You're a great character though.

That's why stormlight gets the edge over king killer right now. No one comes close to PR's prose, but Sanderson gets the edge on overall story telling. Rothfuss is like reading great poetry in story form when he is on though. It's masterful.

No, but I did just recheck the release date. Still November.

I haven't read all the novellas. But I like that side plot. The bounty hunter fascinates me. I know they expanded on it in the archanum, which I still need to read.
I'm trying to get through Robin Hobb's collection at the moment. The female author in this genre has been a different experience for me.

I need to read all the side stuff as well. I'm kind of tired of throwing money at Sanderson though. I think I've read all of his major stuff outside of elantris.
I just picked up the first Hobb book as well. Thoughts? I've read great reviews of her stuff, but wonder about how well a female does heroic male fantasy characters.

Emotionally. Stubbornly. Fitz has had the same character flaws from a teenager to 60 years old. It's frustrating at times to read how he comes to his decisions through the same flawed logic. But her overall character development is great. She weaves relationships brilliantly and focuses on those far more than the male writers we mentioned. There is never going to be intense, dramatic battle scenes or the like. But she still creates tension and foreboding well.
Her prose is just below Rothfuss, IMO, but better than the others. She can have pacing issues b/c of the constant relationship building, but I would still recommend all the Fitz/Fool stuff. Last one comes out next week.

I still read all of them. Easy, fun, and I can't seem to let go of those characters.

Fantasy is probably my favorite genre to read, but to me, when done correctly, nothing beats a good horror. The problem: there's way more trash horror out there and the truly transcendental stuff is super rare.
Even with Stephen King, out of everything he's written, the only books that hit that mark are It, Shining, and his masterwork The Stand. Outside of those you have stuff like Swan Song, House of Leaves, Watchers, a few Barker novels and not much else.
Ugh, I love horror, but the quality varies way too much.
Science Fiction is right there with Horror, but with a better top tier, I just enjoy horror more.

I don't know that I have a genre, per se. I'm pretty all over the map.
Currently in my queue to read:
1) Finishing the Sackett series by Louis L'amour (this is my fourth of fifth time through this Western series).
2) I'm currently listening to The Stand on audiobook.
Last time I went to Books-a-Million, I bought the following:
1) The Mayfair Witch Chronicles (Anne Rice)
2) Dune
3) Natchez Burning (Greg Isles).
I really want to get into a sci-fi/fantasy series (read all of ASOIAF), but I just don't know where to start.
Anyone have any suggestions?

I'm a fan of espionage type books.
Tom Clancy is my current kick.
Also loved David Baldacci's camel club series

Sci Fi
Hyperion Cantos series by Dan Simmons
Old Man's War series and Redshirts by John Scalzi
Red Rising series by Pierce Brown
Redshirts is the best book
I love Fantasy as well but most of what I would mention has already been posted.

Sold me on the prose and last book release date comments. Now I'm excited to dive into them. Appreciate the opinions!

It's like nothing i've read before. The first book is confusing and has lots of magic. I think the writer is an anthropologist or something so it has an interesting tone to it. It picks up lots of steam in the ongoing books and you can't put it down.
He does like to introduce lots of new characters with very in depth back stories though.
