For those that have read the series:

Do I start with The Hunt for Red October or go in the chronological order - starting with Without Remorse?

I started with Red October but given the chance again I'd probably go chronologically.

JR isn't in WR (although, since it's about Clark, it is in the Ryanverse). His first book would be Red Rabbit.

Doesn't Patriot Games come before Red Rabbit chronologically?

I don't think so. But it's been so long since I read them...

Pretty sure he was an analyst with CIA before RR, but I could be wrong.

Yes.

You can read them in either order (chronological or publication, as the latter is how a lot of fans read them).

I haven't read Red Rabbit, but from what I hear it's largely disconnected from the rest of the timeline. No significant references to it in later books or spoilers for earlier books.

JR is mentioned in passing. He's in college at the time.

WR is a prequel. First real JR appearance is Patriot Games. Patriot Games is about how he becomes a CIA agent. Red Rabbit is set during his CIA career.

Jack Ryan Chronology

And FWIW, Red Storm Rising is Clancy's best work, IMO.

I didn't read them chronologically in in the beginning, but would suggest it.

Interesting. Never knew he collaborated on it, either way, it's my favorite book credited to Clancy.

This.

I read Cardinal of the Kremlin first. Hadn't heard of Clancy before that.

Spoiled Red October (but fortunately, didn't have any real spoilers for Patriot Games).

You won't be disappointed. Great series of books. I bought the whole set off ebay several years ago.

Without Remorse may not be a JR book, but it was fantastic. I've got a stack of books to read, but now I want to pull out my JR books and re-read.

This series is on my list to read soon. I'm going through the Cotton Malone books (Steve Berry) right now.

I did pick up Without Remorse to read on the beach a few weeks ago. I was looking for a good vigilante book and knew I wanted to get into the Ryan series soon. So this worked out perfectly for me. I thought it was a fabulous story. I highly recommend Without Remorse whether you're going to read the Ryan series or not.

I didn't realize the books continued on so through so many novels. The last one I read was bear and dragon.
Was there a drop off in writing once Clancy passed?

My favorite is The Sum of All Fears

Without Remorse is John Clark'story and is outstanding!

I'd read them in the order they were written, as Clancy built the series that way

But Red Storm Rising has Ryan as a lt. before he even went to the CIA. He's in a helicopter crash. It is very action filled.

I don't like the Mark Greany stories nearly as much
