Did Terry Brooks rip off J.R.R. Tolkien with his Shannara books?

I enjoyed both, and yes I do see where he borrowed or in the words of SNAP "sampled", but both were enjoyable, imo.

I never read LotR as a kid, but I did read the first few Shannara books. I very much dug them back in the day.

Panamon Creel...was that his name...is still a favorite character of mine.

I vaguely remember reading some of these in middle school. Got monster points in Accelerated Reader.

Par and Coll were the main characters in the one's I read. And maybe their uncle who lost an arm or something too??

You could say this about every fantasy book since Tolkien.

I read the first 6 when i was younger and now I think there are about 600 of them. Guess he needed to get paid.

I'm sure Tolkien probably borrowed some things from popular folklore.

I wouldn't say he ripped off Tolkien anymore than any other fantasy writer.

The original Shanarra book was heavily influenced by Tolkien and Brooks even credits that in his comments.

Brooks is a much easier read i think, and I think he has expanded his world too far away from the original stories, but i guess he gets a pass on that since the stories span centuries.

The "genesis" series where he is combining the shanarra universe and his Knight of the Word stories has been very good as well.

I read the first book plus the first series that was set a few centuries later. They were decent reads, especially in middle school.

I also remember the point and click adventure game. I played that shite for days.

This. Or Tolkein via D&D.

You can say they are all influenced but not that they are all absolute ripoffs.

I would say Terry Goodkind's Sword of Truth series is more of a ripoff of Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time series.

I think Jordan/Goodkind is the perfect example. Jordan's Aiel were obviously influenced by Frank Herbert's Fremen but it was an influence, not a ripoff. Goodking just rewrote Wheel of Time and threw in a few bondage scenes.

This.

I was partial to Dragonlance as a kid, although I did read a bit of Brooks.

All of the books? No.

The Sword of Shannara is a total rip off

shea=frodo
flick=sam
alanon=gandalf
Balinor=aragorn
borona=sauron
sword=one ring
skull mt.=mt doom
gnomes=orcs
druids=wizards
skull bearers=nazgul

Like rock Music, JRR Tolkien is a massive influence on a ton of writers. Plenty of people borrow from him.

J.R.R. Tolkien would be happy if he did, he wanted to write a base mythology and have other build upon it.

Basically yeah. It's like accusing video game creators of ripping off Miyamoto. Of course they're doing it when they completely laid down the groundwork for the genre. GRRM openly admits he took a lot from Tolkien and is trying to subvert some of the genre norms he created.
