Interesting read. I'm not sure I'd seen a discussion before on the connection between Jon' stabbing and the Azhor Azai prophecy. Especially the bleeding star being Sir Patrek. I always thought that was just an inside joke between a Giant's fan (GRRM) and a Cowboy's fan (a friend of his apparently named Patrek).
It would be rather Martinlike for it to be both at the same time really.

We got into how well Jon's death fit the AA prophecy pretty early in this thread. It's amazing how few people have actually accepted a major character's death in this series. Jon being AA is almost a given in our minds and anything else would be a giant twist by Martin.

Agreed. I think Jon is Azor Ahai Reborn but you never know with Martin.

Pretty much to a large extent. I'd be fine if he wasn't AA, but if he didn't come back this series would be such a waste of time from a time spent and payoff situation.

A small part of me (very small part) actually wants Jon to be actually dead or at least just imprisoned in Ghost's body just because that would be such a big twist and piss so many people off.

I'd be pretty annoyed, not because he's dead, but because he's basically done nothing lasting in the series. Perhaps you could say the defense of the wall from Magnar, but other than that nothing really. Him dying at this point makes a huge part of the books a gigantic waste of time. I'd be pissed just because of how much time Martin spent on his character given how slow arse he writes.

It wouldn't be as huge of a waste of time if he is just imprisoned in Ghost's body permanently. He just finishes out the series as a wolf. He could actually have some impact in that form. I don't really see this happening for the reason you said though. Too much time invested.

Well to be fair, the Wildlings would never have been able to come over without Jon, that's a pretty huge thing

Agreed. If this was a true ongoing series or he had an unlimited number of books and unlimited time, I could see GRMM maybe axing Jon and working up Rickon or maybe Arya. (and Tommen, maybe Myrcella in the south). But it's getting pretty close to fish or cut bait time I think and I think getting rid of Jon altogether would do some serious damage to the narrative cohesion of this series from here on out.
But hey, who knows. Maybe he'll put in Tormond Giantsbane as the new narrative voice at the Wall/far north.

Here's a topic I was contemplating (It's not speculation but I figured this was the best place to put it rather than opening a new SOI&F thread):
What, in your opinion, was the most idyllic scene/passage to date in SOI&F?
I personally would go with Tyrion's time aboard the Shy Maid, with Griff, Young Griff, Septa Lemore, etc.
It was not without it's dangers and difficulties. But to me that section read like the closest thing to an "adventure" that they have in the books.

Without Jon they would have came through before Stannis even arrived, so either way the result would be almost equal.

Same here. Jon dying altogether would be a huge waste, IMO. And as much as Dany annoys me at times, her story would be a huge waste if she died in Essos not accomplishing shite.

Impact doing what? Running around killing folks? That's not an impact given the amount of pages spent on the character. And that would beyond hokey and lame if Jon was around the rest of the series as a wolf. It would be tremendously unoriginal and quite frankly insulting.
I have zero issues with Jon going out during the later books when the shite actually goes down or even before, but wasting thousands of pages on character, not to mention the mystery of his backstory would just be absurd.

Exactly. If they die after managing to play a major role in the series that's fine, but if either died at this point it would be a gigantic waste of time considering they have had almost no lasting impact on the story in Westeros.
The same for Bran if he doesn't actually do anything with his powers to make a major impact, though at least with Bran his page count is pretty low.

Anyone have a good reading list for something other than ASOIAF? I'll probably get my re-read in before TWOW comes out, but right now I'm looking for something different.

Hey, looks like I'm unbanned. Thanks to the admin and the supportive posters of last week.

And yeah, really disappointed in the finale. Wish they just sped it along and just had the story focus on Bran, Arya, Jon, and just speed things along to the Purple Wedding. So CE Tiger, I have humbly eaten my pie that I truly deserve.
