Why is Varys on the "bad" list?

He's not, it's Viserys, Dany's older crazy brother.

Varys is on the it's complicated for now because his motives are unclear.

An I think a character's motives play a huge part in determining good vs bad. Tywin and Littlefinger's motives are almost always completely self serving, even the seemingly benevolent ones.

And Cersei is a bad bitch, everything is she does is self serving and not one redeeming quality, unless you count loving her bastard children.

But she sucks at that too.

What about Ilyn Payne? Was he just doing his duty to his lords? There is a line in there somewhere that he "lives just for the killing" or something like that.

IIyne Payne is more likely to end up on the good list than bad.

He's the perfect tool.

He's loyal, especially after getting his tongue cut out. He doesn't balk or question the people he serves. He has no ulterior motives that we know of.

He just works for the wrong people in most of the story.

He could have just as easily been a good servant of death at Winterfell or the Wall and not caused any problems.

Can't really put him in any list.

Perhaps we have seen Syrio, but he didn't look the same.

Where is Sandor Hugo??

He seemed pretty clearly bad at first, but now I'm even wavering on him.

The show did a good job last week showing his conflicted sense of loyalty to his Prince when talking about riding down the butcher's boy.

Other than just being kind of unfriendly and bullying Sansa and Arya around, I'm almost inclined to say he's good???

Never thought I'd say that, but he really is a very intriguing character IMO.

Him being so offended by the charges of murder by the BWB, even in the book, is really one of my favorite parts of character development.

He's almost right up there with Jamie as being misunderstood IMO. I think he was labeled early on being from House Clegane and never cared enough what people think of him to try to change their perception of him. He seems to kind of like his Hound persona actually, although his interactions with Sansa indicate he is tiring of it.

Feels strange to say that, so everyone be gentle when bashing me please.

I think you could say the same for him as Ilyn Payne. If he was on the other side he wouldn't seem bad at all, twisted and brutal sure, but not bad

The Hound has no business on the bad list.

He's a killer no doubt but he's had several instances of good.

Saving Sansa arse being number one.

He has a visible moral compass depite being unsavory.

Pretty much on the level with Bronn IMO

Ok glad to see I wasn't going crazy thinking this.

And you're term "unsavory" is perfect. He's a soldier through and through, and just doesn't question orders, a la the butcher's boy.

I'd even put him a notch above Bronn in that at least he isn't driven strictly by money and greed. Sandor has no use for gold

The show adding that scene bt Sandor and Bronn was great.

Bronn may be more fun to hang with, but Sandor is a "better" person imo.

Bronn abandoning Tyrion, while pragmatic, made me lose some respect for him. Sure, their relationship started for money and mutual benefit, but it had clearly evolved to more of a friendship.

Meh, there is a big difference between being someone's friend and being suicidal. Even after Tyrion kills his dad goes into exile Bronn is still sticking up for him and giving Cersei the finger as much as he can, naming his bastard step-son after Tyrion.

Agree about the Hound having more of moral compass than Bronn though, even though both are bloodthirsty bastards.

Yeah I'm not saying he should have fought Gregor. But i felt he sort of abandoned him even before that. Not sure what he could have done differently, just felt something about that situation felt off from their prior interactions.

And yeah naming his son Tyrion was great, but almost felt like he did it because he was ashamed and wanted to make amends.

Sandor is a classic example of a bait and switch by Martin. We were obviously supposed to lump him in as "bad" very early on. But he was never truly evil. The butcher's boy was a bad action but he was carrying out orders (that's a whole other can of worms of course). No worse than Jamie chucking Bran out the window i think.

He was always depicted as uncomfortable with Joffrey's worst psycho behavior. I think his redemption arc will continue if that is really him with the monks.

The whole scene with the butchers boy and Sansa's wolf cast Cercsi as bad for me and I can't buy into any attempts to soften her in the later books. I still don't like to watch that early episode of the show for some reason. It pisses me off.

I think Osha may be one
Obvious ones are people like Hot Pie Maybe Illiryio?
But I imagine he'll have something else to do. A few of the Sand Snakes, maybe Myrcella? But I guess she'll be around, at the least someone will kill her and we'll hear about it
eta: Oh and Benjen Stark

I think that we ultimately need to know about what happened to Benjen...did he become an Other, is he just plain dead, is he in a disguise, etc.

I want Hot Pie to return and bake Arya more Direwolf bread .

Carrying out orders and getting caught fricking your sister are a little different.
