I think he is pushing because he truly wants to finish the series. If he waits too long he will never get the chance. Though I have a feeling he already has a good portion of the last book written.

The last could very well be his easiest and quickest. He's always known the end game it's figuring out the middle that's been the problem. Although I could see him rewriting it quite a few times as well. I think his main motivation is how embarrassing it would for him if HBO caught him.

How dare this thread get to the 4th page. bump. I'm glad he at least said 2014, but man that's a long time with no new stuff. I guess when it comes back on in April that'll make me happy for 3 months

We'll get a new dunk and egg and world of Ice and fire in between. That plus the tv series will give us a good amount of shite to talk about while we wait

I'm almost finished with ADWD, and I really don't see why so many people hate Theon as a character. Yeah, he has done some despicable things, but he's gotten way more than he deserves in absolute spades. I'd without question pick death over what has happened to him. He's just an easily manipulated individual who if he had his way originally, he'd probably be right in that he would be sitting in Casterly Rock.

No one really hates theon anymore. We think he's weak and we pity him but we don't hate him. At least I dont

Most people agree with you on Theon in this thread.

Also, if he had his way originally, he'd probably end up on the Quiet Isle after his body was dumped in the river post-Red Wedding.

Well the Lannisters would have likely been defeated by that point if Balon Greyjoy had also joined his forces to the Starks. Not sure if Tywin would have gone to King's Landing if Lannisport and Casterly Rock were under an absolute siege or fallen. If that were to happen, it's unlikely Walder Frey would go through with the Red Wedding with the Starks at their height of power and the Lannisters nearly destroyed.

A lot of the hate towards Theon was due to him abandoning Robb. Misguided anger was sent his way when the Red Wedding occurred. But as it stands now, I think we all want to see Theon redeem himself in some major act.

Balon was going to attack the North with or without Theon. He basically gave him a secondary task to keep him busy. I doubt Theon could have convinced Balon to change his plans even if he never turned against Robb.

This. Which makes Theon's suffering even more tragic. He either betrayed Robb and got tortured, or he would have died at the RW.

I'm aware, I'm just saying if Balon wasn't such a stupid, arrogant dick (which even his daughter would eventually have to admit he was), he should have joined his forces with Rob Stark since Theon's plan certainly yielded more reward than his did. Balon's plan was that of stupidity and revenge, not logic.

There is absolutely zero chance this book is finished by 2014. Come on people ADWD was slated for 2005.

I would say there's a 70% chance he doesn't live to finish the series. The closer he gets to finishing it the less time he's putting into actually writing it. Not to mention with the TV series gaining popularity he's got even more reasons to stretch it out instead of finishing it, and there's no way in hell I would peg someone of Martin's stature to make it to age 75 (he's already 64).

I love the series but lets face facts.. the further into the series we've gotten the more parallels to the Jordanian cycle. Stretching out the series, creating more loose ends rather than closing them, and the guy's 64 he's not writing two more books when the 4th one took him 11 years. He stretched the 4th book into 2 how many will he stretch these last 2 into?

He has the TV series now so he has to write quickly. It will be fine. You're overreacting.

I see and understand your point but I truly believe that GRRM really doesn't want the embarrassment of HBO catching up to him and having to either cancel the series or finish the story for him. He's too prideful for that.

And he knows this is HIS masterpiece. He wants to finish it, and I'm sure he is aware that he isn't a young man any more.

What he did not have to do was sack Winterfell. AS it turns out, this was his undoing and his greatest afront to the Starks. His should have pursued a course more akin to the capabilities of the Greyjoys...Raidding.

His father was correct, he was more Stark than Greyjoy.

Without a doubt. Theon was a stark at heart he was most certainly not a greyjoy

I think one of the saddest moments throughout the series is Theon looking back while at Winterfell and wishing he'd died at Robb's side at the RW.

I feel sure HBO brought this up in their negotiations. You think he provided them with a bare bones outline of how its supposed to end?
