Is it worth a library trip, or a purchase. It's critically acclaimed, but I've also seen some negative reviews by a couple of more mainstream outlets.

Admin: I've seen book discussions on here before, but move to another board if necessary.

Read it a few years ago. It was indeed very, very good IMHO. It reads like a McCarthy book, often using sparse prose. It's like Louis L'amour & Quentin Tarrantino had a baby and Blood Meridian came out. It's a violent western. I like it better than The Road. I recommend.

Thanks

I was a big fan of The Road and I've only read the first novel in the Border Trilogy, All the Pretty Horses, which I enjoyed.

I've been thinking about getting Blood Meridian before going on to The Crossing

I bought it for Kindle and will read it after I finish Cities of the Plains.

On a McCarthy kick now.

I read the sample for Blood Meridian and it was ok. But it was only like the first 10 pages

I'll jump out with an extreme opinion.

I truly believe it's the best modern prose I've ever read.

Not saying it's the best book ever, but McCarthy's skill with language is truly unmatched in the modern era IMO. If someone else wrote this book they would need 1200 pages to contain as much detail as he packs into about 300. I really can't say enough good things about it. Just read it to remind yourself that the greatest living novelist is an American.

Certainly is. If we are discussing mastery of language though, then that is my opinion.

I read maybe half of it and while some parts were really good, it left me feeling it was dry, cold, without emotion and it had me not that eager to pick it back up and keep reading, so I eventually didn't. I hope to finish it one day though lol.

In terms of style, he's a master craftsman. But at the same time he can easily be accused, especially with Blood Meridian, of being too celebratory of language and neglecting a compelling story.

Basically the same scene happens 37 times for around 300 pages.

It's worth reading alone for his incredible grip on poetic language, but don't expect to be thirsty for the plot. I gave it a 3 out of 5.

It is very good but not an easy read and not for everyone. Not a lot of fun and often quite brutal.

I'm going to dl it this evening. I'll report back in a week or so, and let everyone know what I think.

It's worth a purchase. Now it can be a difficult read at times due to McCarthy not using quotation marks and untranslated Spanish.

It's perhaps the best novel that I've ever opened.

I'm leaning towards Leauxgan's view on this. I love it for a gritty western, descriptive language, and the setting but the plot isn't something that keeps you deeply engrossed. A few times as reading I kept thinking where's this story going? I was even a little let down with the ending.

As a dad, I think I felt more connection with The Road but I still prefer his western tones a bit more.

Excessively brutal IMO. I like McCarthy a LOT, but that's one I didn't finish. I don't remember where in the book it is, but I had to stop at the tree of dead babies.

I own it. Haven't got it yet, though. It's on my list behind War and Peace (almost finished), It Can't Happen Here, and Love In the Time of Cholera.
